Just to combat the idea that some people have about getting spam e-mails at the address they use for the SDMB, this thread is for folks who never get spam on their SDMB e-mail.
I have a Yahoo address that I have linked here at the SDMB which I use for both this and other purposes. I have NEVER gotten any spam at that address. (I think that it helped that when I signed up for that address, I unchecked the box authorizing Yahoo to distribute my address for marketing purposes or however they phrased it. Whenever I sign up for anything, I make sure to find the usually semi-hidden box about distributing my information to outsiders.)
For several years I had the SDMB linked to my e-mail address from my home cable modem provider. I do not get any spam there, except for an occasional e-mail offering diplomas from “prestigious non-accredited universities.” (I have no idea how I got on that list, and I have all the diplomas I want, thank you.)
I updated my e-mail address last month, and have yet to get any spam. This new one is dedicated entirely to stuff I’ve signed up for (memberships, purchases, online services), and I have another one which is my “private” address.
My prior address was my primary one, and it got loads of spam. However, I used it for almost everything I signed up for, so I can’t blame its spam load entirely on the SDMB. If anything, eBay and another message board was responsible.
I’ve never had SDMB-related spam. The only spam I get at my registration address is likely to have come via some IT training course websites I signed up to.
I don’t. I’ve been using my primary addy as my SDMB email for years, and the few bits of spam I do get from time to time are all from identifiable, non-SDMB sources.
Just the one, from that weird guy who signed up a bunch of SDMBers to his mailing list and then wound up accidentally spamming like 35 bounceback emails to said list. Apart from that, nary a single spam. And I suspect that was from the temporary board, anyway.
All the junk that lands in my inbox is demonstrably from non-SDMB sources. My other email address - the one that isn’t in my profile - is full of messages trying to sell me steroids. Go figure.
To state the obvious; I don’t think those who do receive Spam, as I do, can really know for sure from where it came.
However, I sometimes wonder if ‘one’ can instinctively come to irrational conclusions that, for example, it’s probably from the STMB because we spend so much of our online time here (well I do) – absolutely no correlation at all between time spent on the board and the likelihood of receiving Spam but the self-explanation doesn’t have to be rational.
Also, because the board is probably foremost in the minds of many when we/they think about their Internet time, it’s easy to forget that other ‘thing’ you signed up for on the spur of the moment six months ago and never thought about again. And which is responsible for the Spam.
FWIW, I do receive Spam and the SDMB is way down my list of suspects. Nonetheless, I’m tired of it and I’m looking at all the options available and that, irrationally or not, including the e-mail address in my profile here.
Probably tokenism but sometimes you just feel you need to do something.
Nah, I can trace most of my spam to a column my partner wrote. He’s very cleverly used my addy as his contact details and the spam usually has enough detail I can point the finger at him.
I was caught up in that bizarre music group thingy which I still believe was a SDMB thingy because there were so many of us receiving it with the SDMB being the only point of contact.
No spam here. Of course, I keep my e-mail addy private here, but I rarely get any spam, ever. I belong to quite a few lists over at yahoogroups, and still don’t get any spam.
I also changed my email address, but I also don’t allow anyone here to see it (except admin of course); haven’t had any spam since. I completely zonkered the first email address I used, 20 or more spam messages a day…had to abandon it.
My email address is public here. I seldom get spam at my current email addy, but I’ve gotten lots of spam at the previous email addy I used here. It was an email.com address and I only used it here.
I rarely get spam at my primary email address. I suspect it has more to do with what provider you use, since I’ve had this address for some time, but it’s usa.net, which is a lesser-known email provider. My address has always been public the whole 2+ years I’ve been on the SDMB, and I get maybe one spam a week here, while the Hotmail adress I haven’t used in over a year and never used as my SDMB address gets an ever-increasing amount of spam.
