I do this quite often. I’ll give you an example that happened today, even.
I was working at something that indirectly involved genetics. Often, when I work, I like to explain to myself the theory behind what I am doing, partly to relieve monotony and partly to make sure I still know what the hell it is that I’m doing. So I’m thinking about genetics, which leads quite naturally to genes. From there I made a leap to Levis. Then my brain came up with this little gem:
Q: Why do people get wedgies?
A: Recessive jeans!
Well, I lost it. Starting busting a gut right there in the lab while my coworkers looked at me like I had an arm growing out of my ass.
I also remember stuff that happened long ago and just remembering it can make me laugh all over again. Another recent example:
A few years ago I was in a bar with a friend having a friendly chat over some drinks. In the middle of the conversation, my friend pulls out a cigarette and says to me in the same conversational tone of voice “give me your fuckin lighter before I fuckin lose it”. To me, this was (and is) hilarious. I know most people don’t really find that funny, but just remembering it made laugh.
Or remembering the Simpsons episode where Homer is getting chased off Burns’ property and Homer say to Burns: “What are you going to do? Release the dogs? Or the bees? Or the dogs with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you? Go ahead, do your worst!” Man, that shit is FUNNY! That defintely makes me laugh if I think about it randomly while daydreaming.
So, my questions to you are: Do any of you do this? Do you find it strange? If you saw someone quietly doing their work and then started laughing for no reason, would you think they are some kind of psycho?
On second thought, an arm growing out of your ass might be a help in that area.
I think I crack myself up more than other people crack me up. I can’t think of an example right now. It’s not been that funny a day. But it does happen.
I laugh at my own jokes sometimes. It tends to be either when I know the joke won’t get a laugh but will get loads of rolled eyes, or when the joke is going to get me hit very hard.
I figure as long as someone is laughing, it was worth it.
I often work alone and my mind will wander to things that have made me laugh and I"ll just start laughing about it al over again. [post=5895924]This post[/post] will have me laughing for weeks every time I see a chair.
The 4 most memorable nuggets (or turds) of wisdom my (very non-PC) Dad offered:[ol][]You roll around in shit, you come out smelling like it[]People who don’t polish the backs of their shoes are the same ones who don’t wipe their ass properly[]A stiff dick has no conscience, and[]Only a retard laughs at his own jokes[/ol]. Perhaps I just refuse to grow out my period of youthful rebelion, but I still embarrassingly cackle at my own jokes.
Guilty as charged. I think of absurd puns and turns of phrase all the time that make me laugh - sometimes out loud. Some of them are more funny to me than others, and I’ll get the body-shaking, can’t breathe, uncontrollable giggles for minutes. My wife laughs at maybe one in 100. But she has no sense of humor. I think she does it on purpose. She tells me she says funny things at work that collapse a room full of people. Of those, I laugh at maybe one in a hundred. I don’t do it on purpose, it’s just that our senses of what’s funny as shit and inconceivably dumb are different. But yeah, if I didn’t entertain myself, few people would.
Recessive jeans. Hee. “Ot ie.” Now I’m going to be laughing every time I drive by a KFC. This thread is cracking me up–it’s good to know I’m not the only one with a weird sense of humor.
I laugh at my own jokes, which is good, because sometimes other people don’t laugh. Except my mom–I get my love of silly jokes from her. It’s fun to make her laugh.
Sometimes when I’m watching TV and someone says something really stupid, I break out into a really goofy Bill Cosby impersonation while I explain it to my cat. He looks at me like I’m a complete moron while I laugh my ass off.
My older brother always laugh at his own jokes. Me and my three other siblings never do. Actually, it’s rather the contrary. We make jokes while keeping a very serious tone and a straight face (I know this has a name in english, but can’t remember it. You’re welcome to enlighten me).
Few years ago, my GF and I went to Jamaica for a much-needed vacation, and I thought of something funny on the flight down (It was a response to the UPS question “What Can Brown Do For You?”, my answer being “Stain My Undershorts.”) When I cracked up, my GF asked me why I suddenly burst into hysterical guffaws on the crowded plane, I told her, she smiled.
I kept exploding everytime I remembered the joke. (Three years later, I’ve laughed at loud at it in typing these 2 paragraphs.) GF, increasingly annoyed, kept reminding me how it wasn’t THAT funny.
The whole vacation, I would periodically remember the joke, and tears would be streaming down my cheeks, oh, about three or four times a day.
I had a very nice vacation, but my GF was convinced by the end of it that she was dating a disturbed person.
