Who fixes Windows

The outer pane of one double hung window is broken. I know that there used to be glaziers, but cannot find one. Do they still exist? Who would fix a window?

The original equipment was Weathershield and there is no longer any such distributor anywhere near us.

If it’s the outer pane of sealed unit double glazing, a window repair company should just be able to pop it out and replace the unit - if it’s a nonstandard size, they may have to make it to order.

Glazier may be a somewhat archaic term - look at Window fitting places who will direct you to the appropriate supplier.

and it may be too late in the week - glaziers come on thursday

I know you are looking for someone to fix it and not to fix it yourself, but I just figured I’d tell you this:

I measured the window when I broke a pane, brought the measurements to home depot, and had a piece of glass cut to size for a total of $3.13. Then I bought glazier’s compound for $1.29, a box of glazier’s points for $2.00, and a glazier knife for $4.00, and set to work.

From the outside, after cleaning the window pane thoroughly and VERY lightly sanding, put the new glass pane in place, and put in two glazier’s points on the left and right sides. From here you roll the glazier’s compound into long 1/4 inch thick strands, and wedge it into the edges of the windows. When you’ve got all sides covered, run the glazier’s knife at a 45-degree angle along each end of the window. Rub your finger along the compound to smooth it. Let it dry for about a week. Paint it.

Total cost: ~$10.00
Quoted repair cost: ~$40.00

Additional benefit to doing it yourself: excess materials for next time (there WILL be a next time) and life-long know-how.

Many of your local general contractors will know of someone who can do this. Also check out local handyman type businesses. Many of those guys are semi-retired GCs or at least have a lot of experience in various trades.

Don’t just choose any old JoeBlow, tho. A bad re-glazing job can cost you in window sweating and a bad exterior look. Even for a small job like this, refs are a good idea.

I found out that removing the window and taking it to the window (glass) shop saves you major $$$$$. If you can remove it the window and take it (the part with the broken glass) to them, it’s well worth your time.

If its a thermopane then it will be a bit more expensive. Either are pretty simple to install but if you haven’t done it find a handyman.

Unless you are in Chicago then PM me.

It’s great that you were able to do this (and I’ve done it, too, on an old window; it’s not that difficult), but the OP is most likely talking about a sealed double-glazed window. It’s not something you can have cut to size, although chances are it’s a standard size that can be purchased (assuming s/he can figure out how to remove it without damaging the frame).

Look for an outfit with ‘Glass’ in it’s name such as YourTown Glass or MyTown Glass and Mirror. They usually have a truck outfitted with all the supplies they need to repair or replace.

I’ve used a service with the name “Handyman” in it - I think it’s a franchise deal. I’m not associated with them in any capacity, but they’ve done several small jobs for me.

Double pane glass can be ordered. I had 2 slider aluminum windows in a 2ftx6ft opening. Replaced both with double pane panels that didn’t open. So far it hasn’t fogged up after 10 years.
