Who gets a present? Who gets a card? Who gets nothing?

Sorry. I can’t find a thread like this and i’m lazy, although it seems like a very familiar dilemna.

So…in the world of Etiquette and what-not, how do you decide when to get someone a Christmas present as opposed to a card-
Do you anticipate that they will get you something and act accordingly?
Do you base it on what they gave you last year?
What if you’ve known the person less than a year?
Should you feel ashamed if someone gets you something and you don’t even think of getting something for them?
In some cases, I don’t get a person anything unless I see something so absolutely perfect that it would be a shame not to do so.

But what do you think?

I tend to give the people I’m closest to gifts and cards or nothing to others.

I work in a large company and each year there are 2 or 3 people that I am not sure about. What I do is buy or make 2 or 3 extra gifts and if they come to me with one I am able to reciprocate. That way nobody is embarrassed. One year I made up 15 pounds of garlic butter in glass jars. It was a hit.
All the best for the holidays.
