Ah, L.A. life. Gotta say, I’m not liking it too much. The freeway congestion–hell, the population congestion–is getting to be too much for me. While traveling to visit fam, I remarked on just how many freeways are within close means of our home…and then it became a game of naming all we could think of in a 10-to-30 mile radius. I’m curious if anyplace has more than this concrete wonderland.

That makes a grand total of 11 within 10 miles, and 34 within 30. And that’s just when I got too bored scouring MapQuest to count any more.
Freeways wise, I, suprisingly, have more than four within 10 miles of my residence.
I-190
Robert Moses Parkway
LaSalle Expressway
Ontario Provincial Hwy 405
The Queen Elizabeth Way (Ontario)
OK, so the Robert Moses and the LaSalle aren’t really interstates. They were both built before the interstate highway system was incorporated, and they didn’t get numbers. Not that they should, though–the Robert Moses goes from Niagara Falls to the happening town of Youngstown, pop. 1000, and the LaSalle goes from Niagara Falls to Love Canal. Charming.
The surprising part about this all is that probably only 60,000 or so people actually live within 10 miles of Lewiston.
within 30:
111
120
113
I-495
There are more, but that’s all I can come up with off the top of my head. (I know this many only because I realized a few months ago that reciting them in my head helps me to fall asleep )
Highway 401
Highway 403
Queen Elizabeth Way/Gardiner Expressway
Highway 427
Don Valley Parkway
407 ETR
Highway 400
Highway 410
So that’s eight within 15 miles or so.
Now, when you guys name routes, are those all FREEWAYS? Elfkin, you actually have two dozen freeways within 20 miles? A freeway being a divided and continous road with no stop signs, traffic lights, or any such things, entered and exited by purpose-built ramps and entryways.
The nearest interstate to me is at least 100 miles away, maybe more.
There’s a few US routes - US 41, and US 2. But I don’t even think they’d count as freeways. With the exception of a few 2-5 mile parts that go between certain small towns, they’re all two lane nondivided highways. And when I say two lane, I mean two lanes total - one lane going in each direction.
Like RickJay, I think the issue getting confused between numbered routes and freeways. The OP seems to be talking about strictly “freeways”, or what Rand McNally in my road atlas calls “free limited access highways” and shows in blue. The OP’s statement seems to be correct, because not all freeways in LA are interstates. But some of the other posters’ submissions I find highly unbelievable.
For me, the answer is “2”. 30 miles gives me maybe 5.
Yeah, mine are all freeways, even if not numbered as interstates, and if, like the LaSalle, they were probably built by mistake.
Let’s see…what have I got within 30 miles? Add in Ontario Provincial Hwy 406, OPH-420, I-290, I-990, I-90 (ie “The NYS Thruway”), US-219, NYS-198 (the Sacaquada Parkway), NYS-33, and NYS-400. Not bad for living effectively in the middle of nowhere.
