Who here likes reaction videos?

I like the ones were they feed little British schoolchildren American food and ruin their entire damn lives. Here, try some Texas brisket or cajun fried chicken, now go back to eating your beans on toast ya little shit.

95% are crap. People watching a video and interjecting a couple of times obvious stuff like they were Deanna Troi in Season 1 of ST:TNG.
But there are a few channels where the reacter actually adds something to the videos and those are good.

I agree. The only good one of these I’ve watched is a cinematographer reacting to 2001. (How he never saw it is beyond me.) He offered interesting insights in how and why Kubrick framed certain shots. I also watched some average people react, and it was laughable. I’ve mostly given up on them, though YouTube shows me many.

Yeah those do add value to the watching.

Quickly wore out their welcome especially when so many are one-handing it. Buy a tripod.

I have fun some times with the ones that are like, “let’s show these high school kids a music clip from pre-1980 and see if they recognize it” kind of stuff. No big pretenses, just a game.

Particular annoyance, “reactors” who are apparently devoid of ANY cultural background reference whatsoever. “Is that right? What is that? What does that mean? What did he say? When was that? Who? Did that really happen?” every 30 seconds.

Hey, if they fool me, then fine by me. The ones I like are where they have something meaningful to say about the movie. Watching someone just sit there quietly gets turned off after a few minutes. Same with folks who just yell and say, “WOAH! COOL!”

And yeah, I only watch reactions to stuff I’ve already seen and enjoyed since the movie is always edited down. Otherwise it’s just a big spoiler of something I might have enjoyed.

There’s one channel like that the irritates me because they take something like 5 burgers with different toppings that are not particularly common in the US, present them as if they were typical American food, and feed them to a panel of Irish people. Sure, I don’t doubt that those burgers exist on the menu at at least one restaurant in the US, but the video is presented as “Irish People Try American Burgers” as if they were everyday foods in America.

I tend to like the ones where a British Youtuber actually visits the US and tries things like Philly Cheesesteaks and Texas brisket. Although some of those do tend to lean in the direction of just pandering to us Americans by telling us about how awesome everything in America is.

And use manual focus if your camera isn’t up to the autofocus task–if it’s hunting every 10 seconds going in and out of focus, you probably ought to use a tripod, manual focus, and maybe a smaller aperture to give you some depth of field.

That goes for any videos where people are showing stuff up close. There’s a coin dealer who I watch who shows coins up close all the time–that’s his job–so why does his camera keep hunting? Just use fixed focus!

Yeah, the Try Channel. It was a lot better in the beginning when they had folks trying stuff for the first time. But they’ve worn out the premise and are down to things like, “Irish people try out some different flavors of Pringles or brands of vodka.”

I am another that is generally “meh” on reaction videos. If they are qualified to analyze something, then that’s generally a different story.

When they do specific brands of hot food I always wonder how they can get it fresh. I think food suffers when I get it as take out. I’m not travelling to Ireland with it.

I don’t often watch, though some are fun.

I do like “Movies with Mia” with Mia Tiffany. She clearly knows her movies. But she hasn’t seen the movie she’s commenting on, even when she knows its history.

I’ve watched a few - ones that I’m pretty sure are real (things like a movie audience reacting to the final battle in “Avengers: Endgame” which is nice because it recreates my experience of being in a crowd reacting better than just streaming the movie does, or reactions to the Doctor Who 50th anniversary). The music reactions leave me cold

I saw a compilation once of Game of Thrones readers who’d set up cameras to record what happened when their unsuspecting partners saw the premiere of the “The Red Wedding” episode. That was pretty entertaining.

Yeah, everything at the very least looks extremely fresh and unless they are putting on an act the kids seem to enjoy it. I always wondered how they did it.

I enjoy Virgin Rock - a classically trained musician who has never previously sat and listened to modern rock music hearing songs for the first time and giving her insights.

Thanks, I like her. Subscribed.

Music reaction videos to music I already like are kind of a guilty pleasure. Every few months I’ll go down a YouTube rabbit hole of nostalgia and these will pop up (often Charismatic Voice, sometimes other ones) and I’ll end up watching a bunch.

I agree the ones that are just mindless over-the-top “zomg wow um yeah wow!” are incredibly irritating.

And the example you give is of a 50 year old song

Speaking of 50 year old songs, how about a reaction compilation:

I love reaction videos from music instructors watching music from another era that they might not be familiar with. Hearing a guitar instructor talk about Tommy Emmanuel’s “Classic Gas” is a next level experience. Hearing a vocal instructor rave about Sebastian Bach’s vocals in a song like “Wasted Time” taught me a lot about what I need to work on.

But I’ll watch any reaction video of someone seeing Primus’s “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” for the first time. That song and the accompanying video are absolutely the most corny example of brilliance I have ever seen. That song is full of innuendos that don’t quite work, and seeing people react to that along with the music is just a lot of fun.
