Who Is Imus, Anyway?

Let me tell you a story.

A tall lanky dude in a three piece suit shows up on a ranch in Colorado and asks for a job as a cowboy the boss and the cowhands laugh at the dude and the boss says, “Fine, I’ll hire you, but first you have to show me you can ride Diablo.”

Now Diablo was the meanest cayuse that ever graced the Western Slope and nobody ever came away from him without broken bones and nobody ever broke him. So the dude walks over to the corral and climbs aboard the horse as seven hands held the killer horse in place. They let him go and the man in the Armani suit is aboard and stays aboard and rides the horse for 15 minutes, when the horse finally admits who’s boss.

The ranch owner runs up to the man after he dismounted and said, "You got any job on this place you want, but you’re clearly an experienced cowboy, maybe the best I have ever seen, why is it you dress like that? He says gesturing at the three piece suit.

The cowboy looked at the rancher and said, “I just don’t want anybody thinking I’m Don Imus.”

That’s what the feeling is out here for Imus. Here is a guy that grew in Cleveland and moved to New York and became a big time big mouth on the radio yet the guy walks around like he is Clint Eastwood. Yeah, yeah, I know he bought a ranch in New Mexico, but I’ve got news for you. He ain’t a cowboy. He is a pretend cowboy. He’s what we call a drugstore cowboy.

I’m so tired of people from back east coming into town pointing out one of the locals and saying, “Isn’t that cute, he looks just like Don Imus.”

I want to explain that no he doesn’t. He is the real deal, and Imus is a wanna be. Perhaps now that Imus is out of a job, he will go back to his ranch and learn a little there. You’d be surprised how much humility pulling calves in a 10 below zero blizzard on a hillside out side of Wagon Mound, New Mexico can give you.

Sorry I let go like that, but a lot of us out here have gotten tired of him for a whole different reason than some of you.

That may be, but he’s a big earner for both CBS and MSNBC. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/11/business/media/11imus.html?ref=business

He also raises a shitload of money and awareness for his pet causes. He’s got lots of rich, influential friends.

Ah well, you see, what with this recent rash on threads on Imus saying nasty things, I did often tend to think (if not enough coffee input) that it was pretty impressive for emus to run a radio programme.

I am disappointed.

My department boss said something interesting at the weekly meeting today. An approximate quote: “This weekend, go read Slaughterhouse Five. Kurt Vonnegut died this week, which unfortunately has been covered up by all this Don Imus bullshit. Vonnegut’s passing is more significant than anything Don Imus has done, ever.”
