Who is in a Career pertinent to what they went to college for? Poll.

Certificate in medical records, with emphasis on coding and reimbursement. Yes, I still work in various aspects of that field. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pick up my associate’s and get my RHIT next year.

Robin

Hon.B.A. English and M.A. English = tech writer and English prof
LL.B. and Barr.L. = lawyer

Ph.D in biology (birds and evolution), now working on birds (arboviruses) and computer stuff in an entomology department.

Double majored in French and Political Science, went back and finished the requirements for a K-12 teaching certificate. I’m now a training specialist for a large software company.

BS in microbiology, working as a lab tech doing genetic tests. Semi-related, I guess, but seeing as how I want to go into grad school for this type of thing, it’s pretty close.

Well lets see. I majored in CS(got a BA in it) and now I’m a software engineer. Actually the weird part is even though that’s what you’d expect a CS to be good for my degree had little to do with my job. Seriously, I couldn’t get a software engineering job out of school, I ended up doing tech support.(Stuff they actually would hire high school grads to accomplish.) From that job I got a few connections to people that were looking for SE guys.(And they were not really big on requiring the degree. Of the 6 engineers including myself at most 2 of us have CS degrees and I’m not sure about the other guy.) Of course the weirdest part is that I plan to quit in the next year or so, go back to school to finish up pre-med and then just go on to be a surgeon.(Hey, I’m not too old, I’m only 31:-) So it looks like I won’t be doing what I studied in the end after all.

BS in Biology. Working as a Medical Technologist (for which job I went back and got my BHS).

Was BA and MEd in Elementary and Early Childhood Education and Psych of Reading and taught elementary school for many years.

Now, I’m a Mommy. They didn’t have classes on nappy-changing, creative toddler distraction and figuring out how to lengthen the car seat straps in my uni. They should’ve.

BEng (Elec). I now drive ships for the Navy.

I went to college on an IT-related course (BTEC national diploma in computer technology), found it boring and dropped out halfway through (“recommended to seek employment” = unteachable).

Got a job packing boxes in an export warehouse, worked my way up through that company to an internal audit position at the head office, moved to the buying department of another company, then grabbed a sideways move to IT when a position became suddenly available, a year later the company was bought out and I was offered the IT management position for the group (I didn’t plan any of this).

BSc in Applied Bioloogy (after five years in the RAF as an electronic engineer). First job post college was as a computer hardware engineer, then went to work for a customer as a one-man DP department, then programmer, analyst, now a bsuines consultant. Twenty three years in IT and I have no formal IT qualifications at all.

“Bsuines” consultant? What’s one of those?

BA in English Lit., now a Production Editor for an academic publisher.

I’ll wait for 100 but if we can get 50 posts. I’ll do a cross-sectional analysis of SDMB dopers, and then post the stats. It should be an interesting little informal study.

Original college major: English/journalism
Degree #1: BS in biology/chemistry. Worked in related jobs for 5 years but was unsatisfied with opportunities for advancement.
Degree #2: BA in Computer Science. Working in related jobs since graduation.

BA in Natural Sciences (Physics), MSci in Natural Sciences (Physics), currently doing a PhD (and being paid for!) in astronomy, so yeah, I guess my education’s relevant

MS and BS in Electrical engineering. Working designing chips for cell phones.

I have a good story about this very subject. I went to the Mall to get my Masters degree framed. The woman at the framing store had an English degree. She asked me if I had a job that related to my degree. When I said that I did she wanted to shake my hand as the only person she knew to get a job that related to their degree. She seemed somewhat bitter.

B.A. in political science = lawyer, now editor for legal publisher. IMHO, poli sci really prepares you only for two things, law or academia.

B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering and working in Software Development for 15 years.

:frowning: So where do I look for a job as a philosopher then? I bet my bank manager would like to know. (Nut it haqs to be one where I don’t have to grow a beard).

Seriously - M.A> Moral Philosophy with International Relations, then postgrad. Dip Lib. Have worked as librarian/info officer for business and for government service, but not right now, alas.
