Should Kid Rock be in there somewhere? I’d pull Jack White, though I don’t know who to replace him with.
Obviously, there are tons more, from numerous genres. I could easily have added Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Sonny Rollins. Plus all kinds of artists who came from somewhere else but gained fame and acclaim in New York (Benny Goodman, Bob Dylan). Plus guys who never became hugely popular but were highly influential (The Ramones, Run DMC…).
Did you even read the ground rules?
mmm
For Michigan, I got:
Aretha Franklin
Bob Seger
Stevie Wonder
Iggy Pop
Oof…This is a really tough one. I know I’m going to forget some obvious ones, but here it goes, off the top of my head:
Illinois
Miles Davis
Buddy Guy
Steve Albini
Kanye West
Ohio:
Dean Martin
Doris Day
Marilyn Manson
Eric Carmen
WA
Jimi Hendrix
Chris Cornell
Kenny G
Sir Mix-a-lot
Not in that order
LOUISIANA
Louis Armstrong
Mahalia Jackson
Jerry Lee Lewis
Pete Fountain
Marty Robbins?
Georgia’s tough!
Ray Charles
James Brown
Otis Redding
Johnny Mercer
(Under the ground rules, I don’t think Duane Allman counts)
Minnesota (where the first two are easy and the second two are personal opinions):
Prince
Bob Dylan
Paul Westerburg
Tina Schlieske
Your last one was a pretty hairy choice.
Of course I did, which is why there weren’t any groups/bands on the foursomes I actually DID name.
Would you be happier if I’d just said Joey Ramone and Darryl McDaniels?
The OP doesn’t specify performers. I want to find a way to include Henry Mancini; if not, Ted Lewis.
Massachusetts:
Charles Thompson/Black Francis/Frank Black
James Taylor
Mark Sandman
Leonard Bernstein
Honorary mention: Jonathan Richman, Vic Firth, Steven Tyler (who might be disqualified for moving to Boston technically as an “adult”, but I don’t think Aerosmith were all that mature at that age*!; Joe Perry was born here, but I’m not sure had the same level of influence). I’m sure I’ll think of some others shortly that I’m foolish to have left off! Possibly as a result of other posts…
For Kentucky:
Bill Monroe
Merle Travis
Loretta Lynn
Flip a coin between Phil and Don Everly.
Unfortunately, that means leaving off Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Dwight Yoakum, the Judds, Patty Loveless, and Lionel Hampton.
Missouri:
Charlie Parker
Scott Joplin
Chuck Berry
Pat Metheny
Virginia:
Dave Grohl
Patsy Cline
Roberta Flack (born in NC but raised in Arlington, Va)
Thomas Jefferson (played viiolin and cello)
My four:
Bob Dylan
Judy Garland
Prince
Bobby McFerrin
Washington, DC:
Duke Ellington
John Philip Sousa
Marvin Gaye
Danny Gatton
