Why would that disqualify her? Before her movies were pulled, she was one of the most popular porn stars of the time, and the bust did much to cement her name and notoriety, plus it made her known to the wider public who may not have been aware of her career. (She was also the centerfold in the Vanessa Williams issue of Penthouse, their biggest-selling issue of all-time, which means that a lot of people otherwise not inclined to purchase porn ended up seeing her…)
…but I’d say she’s not as well-known in the general public as Jenna Jameson or Ron Jeremy, and that your overall assertion that she’s not the most famous is correct. For a few years, she was the most publicly visible and (in)famous porn star, but that was before the mainstream popularity of Vivid and the like in the 1990s. I also get the feeling that for older age groups, Linda Lovelace will have greater recognition, even among those who didn’t watch Deep Throat.
It’s not my country anymore, but when I lived in Hungary in the late 90s/early 00s, I would probably say at the time that Michelle Wild (Katalin Vad [lit., “Catherine Wild”]) would fit the bill (although Ciciollina, depending on whether you count her as Hungarian or Italian, might fit the bill, though she was long out of porn by then). Michelle also crossed over into mainstream success (playing a character on a soap opera). Just northwest, in the Czech Republic, the honor probably would go to Silvia Saint.
You obviously have not seen Eartha Quake, who weighed in at ~450 lbs.
