I hate when I end up at a party at someones place and one of the people is a rabid college fan and have invited all of their rabid collage fan friends over too. I mean I can appreciate watching any athletic event, but it can be a strange experiance watching everyone go nuts over a game I don’t care about.
I’ll suppose that’s what people who don’t care for sports at all feel like at sports bars.
The only reason I even know it’s happening is that Go Fug Yourself is doing a Fug Madness (I haven’t checked today, but yesterday it looked like Bai Ling was going to take it all.)
Like many other non-Americans, I’m sure, the whole March hype surrounding US college basketball has no effect on me. I have no interest in US college basketball, at this or any other time of year.
The only time in the past two decades that I paid any attention to the Final Four was the last two years when my alma mater (Florida Gators) were in and won two titles in a row. Other than that it’s zzzzzz. I also haven’t watched the NBA in over a decade tho I was a big fan in the 70’s and 80’s.
My problem with college sports is that no one in my family went to a big school, and almost all of these guys are going to be chemical sales reps or real estate agents or something, so how I can I devote all this time to following their careers? Out of that whole tournament, how many will have NBA careers that are more than a minor footnote? 5?
I could make a case that I have everyone beat. Two of my favorite shows to watch (or listen to) are Pardon the Interruption and Mike & Mike in the Morning. They’ve been very little other than March Madness for the last few weeks, so I’ve been doing a lot of fast forwarding and tuning out. The end result is that it’s like two of my favorite shows are on strike.
So I’m actively annoyed by March Madness, and grew more and more antagonistic to its coverage on a daily basis.
If it were not for the SDMB, I wouldn’t even be aware that they were going on. It gets as much news play here as the national high school baseball tournament at Koshien does in the US.
I don’t know. In fact, I probably know less about what people do and don’t brag about on the Dope than anybody, and I dare you to find someone who cares less.
I don’t care much about the basketball these days, but someone figured out how to predict the Final Four with roughly 83% accuracy (as opposed to 21% for the polls). That’s piqued my interest.
I follow NBA basketball, big Raptors fan, but I have not one whit of interest in NCAA events. I’d a huge sports fan in general but the NCAA’s just of no interest to me. I don’t know where any of thue Raptors played college ball, except Chris Bosh, who I believe went to Georgia Tech, and I only know that because I thought he was a high school draftee and looked it up on purpose.
I am with you, I could not wait for the crap to be over. In March and early April, I want Baseball talk, not college Basketball. It did mean more time listening to NPR at least.
