Okay, I’d seen him before on late night tv, and he really annoyed me. He sings with his eyes closed, has a whiny voice, and seems to recoil from the world. I hated (well, not hated) was not impressed. But all of a sudden, while watching him on my DVR, it hit me like a brick. This guy is me, but with talent. But I don’t know who he is. Can anyone help me to identify this guy?
Oh, on Leno he sang, well sort of, the words, “don’t shrug you shoulders”, or something to that effect.
When I read the OP, I immediately thought of Paolo Nutini. I looked up last week’s guest and he was on Tuesday night. Isthis him?
BTW, the song is “Last Request” and he does sing the line you mentioned in the OP. I actually like Paolo Nutini and bought his CD after seeing him on Craig Ferguson last year.
Not sure I agree with the whiny voice comment, I reserve that for Maroon 5. I have to be in the mood for their music because I find Adam Levine’s voice extremely whiny so it gets on my nerve after awhile.
Thanks so much everybody. In retrospect, I would agree that he doesn’t have a whiny voice, that was just my initial impression, back when he annoyed me. But hey, thanks for the info, Lil’ Mahoney, I will rememeber not to listen to the Maroons.
On another note, isn’t it interesting how music can grow on you? You by an album (ok, I’m dating myself) from some artist that you’ve heard about, but know nothing about. You play it once, and it does nothing for you. But then you think, “I payed good money for this, let me hear it again.” So you play it, and then, slowly but surely, you fall right in love with it.
That’s what I miss about the old days (for me, the 70s). Then you could walk into National Record Mart or whatever, and just flip thru the albums. All of a sudden, some band that you’d never heard of pops up, with an arresting cover. And then you think to yourself, I’ve only got a limited amount of money, going to college and all and paying rent, should I splurge for this, just to see what it’s like? I must’ve perused REM’s Murmur a thousand times before I shelled out the big bucks to take it home. Yeah, it was hard to resist the kudzu at the time, but in the end it was worth it.
I fucking hate that guy!
What guy? Paolo? I did too, if that’s whom you’re talking about. My first reaction, to a “t”.
Should that be “who”?
