Who is this guy?

Who is this actor? This is the scene in Back to School where Rodney Dangerfield rescues the diving competition. He’s not identified in the ending credits. The guy is a dead ringer for my wife’s brother, and I’m trying to convince her that her brother has a doppelganger. I vaguely remember seeing him a few times in sitcoms in the mid to late seventies and maybe even into the early eighties, but other than that I have no idea who he is. Anybody know?

It kind of looks like Brad Pitt with a beard. Hey, is your wife’s brother single?

Naw, Brad Pitt was barely old enough to buy beer when that movie was made. Here’s a shot from another angle if it helps. And my BIL is married.

Is it James Ingersoll?

Could be. His IMDB page lists his role in that movie as: judge.

Nope, I thought of that too. There are three judges, and Ingersoll is the judge on my unidentified guy’s left.

I thought it might be the director, Alan Metter, sneaking his way into a shot…but darned if I can find a picture of the guy.

He almost resembles Jeff Fahey (with black hair) but it’s not credited to him.

I believe that people are only credited for speaking roles. If he doesn’t say anything, then he might not be listed anywhere.

He looks kinda like Jack Tripper’s boss in Jack’s Bistro, or whatever they called Three’s Company after the girls were gone.

Ding ding ding! I think you’re on to something. I sort of remember a sitcom where he had a regular role as somebody who was always getting flustered at the slightest provocation. I’m gonna follow up on this lead and see where it takes me.

Jack’s boss in Three’s a Crowd was his girlfriend’s father, played by Robert Mandan, who also played Chester Tate on Soap.

You’re thinking of Frank Angelino, played by Jordan Charney in some of the later seasons of Three’s Company. (1981-1983, if imdb’s listing is complete.)

I was thinking the second picture makes him look like James Daughton. But IMDB doesn’t have him credited for Back to School.

Mr. Angelino was my first thought as well. Unfortunately this tiny pic of Mr. Angelino is the only one I could find; there are lots of more recent pics of the actor but he looks completely different now.

Yep, that’s who I was thinking of - Mr. Angelino.

Here is the photo that most resembles Mr. Angelino and the other photo in question. I worshipped Three’s Company and even I can’t tell if it is the same guy.

Well, here he is in a third season 1979 episode of Three’s Company sans facial hair. This was seven years before Back to School was filmed. I’m torrenting more episodes as we speak in an effort to find pics of him with facial hair and a few years older.

With facial hair, circa 1983. I’m about 90% certain it’s the same guy, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.

I would say that it’s not the same guy, but that you were reminded of Mr Angelino and that’s why you think he’s familiar.

That’s what I think, too. The guy in the movie looks similar, but his face is a totally different shape.
