My favorite is Tom Clancy. I also like Dale Brown.
My fav is Anne McCaffrey… I’ve read almost all of her books… multiple times… most other authors I can’t claim that about… But whenever I find a book I like I usually read it more then once.
I like Michael Crichton, personally. He uses real science very well to explaining the fictional ideas he writes about. I tend to hate things that go exceedingly mainstream, so I say Jurassic Park is good, but not his best. Great Train Robbery was very interesting, as was Andromeda Strain. His last book, Timeline, was very good, but I think alot of the book was written with a movie in mind (lots of running, swordfights…) Still, it was a great book, especially for those interested in medieval history.
bradysg
Roger Zelazny. I can read his Amber series again and again and still pick up plots and behind the scenes scheming. Wonderful.
Stephen King
George R. R. Martin
Robert Jordan
Ernest Hemingway
Terry Goodkind
In that order.
Those guys kick ass.
Stephen King (where I got my nick), Dean Koontz, Tom Clancy, Dale Brown, Stephen Coonts…most any horror or military fiction.
What a tough question. Narrowing down the favourites to several would be difficult let alone one. Orson Scott Card, Dave Duncan, Dave Barry ;), Tolkein… aaarrgggg!! I could be here all day.
But probably my pick would be Cliver Barker who I consider to be the only true wordsmith in the world atm. Some of his stuff’s only good as opposed to great but the structure and imagery is always masterful.
Oh and Eve of course.
I can’t believe I forgot Tolkien! (Smacks forhead)
I also like Glen Cook’s Black Company series.
In nonfiction I an a big fan of James Loewen.
Terry Pratchett & Cecil Adams
A surprise to everyone: Abbie Hoffman
followed closely by Cecil Adams.
William Poundstone is pretty good too.
I don’t know who the actual author is, but I like all of Uncle John’s Bathroom Readers.
Oh Monster, I just read the 8th book of that the other day. Excellent!
Kurt Vonnegut. Every time I read another one of his books, I feel changed in some way, as if my eyes are a little bit wider and I can see a little more of the world around me.
I’m a hardcore Dean Koontz fan. Close seconds are TOm Clancy and Robert Crichton. Oh, also Elmore leonard.

Well, THANK you, dpr! My favorite author, of course, is MEEEEEEE!
Other that that . . . Hmmm . . . I have so many, most of 'em dead: J.P. McEvoy, Evelyn Waugh, Dorothy Parker, Tiffany Thayer, Olive Higgins Prouty, Chas. Dickens, Jack Finney.
I guess modern authors whose new books I’ll grab every time are Fannie Flagg, Greg King (biographer), Herbert Goldman (biographer).
Dave Barry, no question.
BTW eve, what have you written?
Spooje, if I mouth off about my books one more time, I’m gonna get a knuckle sangwich, so I’ll just give you my amazon link:

By the way, the “Touch Me” book is NOT mine! She says, trying to maintain what little dignity she has left . . .
Andromeda Strain SPOILER if you haven’t read it or seen the movie
I’d have to go with Stephen King and Michael Crichton (although I thought the end of the Andromeda Strain was a cop out, it just mutated on its own into a harmless form? Come on!)
I liked Tolkien and The Hoobit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy but it’s hardly a fave of mine. I’ll probably get jumped for saying this, but reading Lord of the Rings - was it me or did much of just seem to be Frodo walking? I obviously missed something there.
I think I’ve read All of Dave BArry’s books.
