The Queen City Creamery, in downtown Cumberland, bills itself as a “Coffee Bar and Deli”, but everyone knows the real reason you go there is for the frozen custard. On any given day, they only offer three flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and the flavor of the day (they also offer a sorbet flavor of the day). But oh, man, is it good!
As per the OP, it is most decidedly not soft-serve ice cream. It is custard! And I distinctly remember the proprietors patiently explaining that again and again when they first opened.
Colorado has a few shops here and there, like Cloud 9. And we have a growing chain called Good Times which really seems to be spreading the Frozen Custard love. Not the best I’ve ever had… but even so its silky smooth and delicious.
I’ve been to a Goodberry’s once. Best dessert I’ve ever had. I’ve never thought to look for anything similar here in Phoenix, but there’s a Culver’s just down the street. Oh, man. There goes my waistline.
Now, that is some mighty fine stuff. But for all I know their frozen custard would be mocked by any true frozen custard fan. Kind of like if I’d only ever had pizza from Domino’s and therefore thought it the best in the world.
This thread makes me homesick. Ritter’s here in Florida doesn’t remotely measure up to the yummyness of Strickland’s I always wondered why there was such a large amount of custard stands in the Akron area. I thought it was generally a midwest thing, but my observation is that most towns don’t have quite the penetration of Frozen dessert stands that seem to be in Akron. You can’t really trip and fall and not land near some kind of stand it seems.
