I’m not getting why anyone would go to the university to report a crime. Columbia is not in the middle of nowhere. Its in the middle of Manhattan. It doesn’t really have a clearly defined campus. Drive up Broadway and you start driving through the campus. If you dial 911 you get the NYPD. If I want to report a crime I’m going to the cops and not Columbia security guards.* We are talking about adults here not children.
Do you think a slap is the same as getting hit over the head with a baseball bat? Is the theft of a magazine the same as stealing your life savings? There are common sense reasons why crimes have various grades.

Many universities have their own police forces fully trained and with full police powers. I’m 98% sure that Columbia University does not have any of their own police officers.

We’re talking about people who are mostly (not all) legal adults but don’t have that much experience with the legal system and who may be overly worried about getting into trouble if they were drinking, drugging, or partying. Since many of them are still getting used to being on their own, they may also be overly trusting of the university. Even if they’re above the age of majority I think the school is still acting in loco parentis legally.

True crimes have various grades, but wouldn’t you agree that to say one type of crime should not be considered a crime because it is not as severe perverts justice. Say someone hits you in the head, it leaves a nasty scar, would you be content with a judge saying the assailant shouldn’t be charge with anything or face any repercussions because well, he or she (so everything’s gender neutral) didn’t kill you?
What kind of handshake are you talking about? Typically, one person extends their hand and the other person willingly reciprocates. Do you mean the kind where one person extends their hand, the second person does nothing and then the first person grabs the second person’s hand from their side and then shakes it? Cuz I’ve never seen that happen.
I have seen that handshakes like you have described happened. it’s happened to me and I’ve had to explain to the police (Human Resources called them, not me) why I slapped the son-of-bitch. More commonly, is the case in which someone tries to force a women who do not shake hands with members of the opposite sex because their religious, cultural, philosophical whatever, beliefs are that individuals of the opposite genders do not touch each other unless they are family, spouses, or it’s necessary to save someone’s life, to touch some unrelated man because he’s an ass and can’t resist the opportunity to make her conform to his will. For a woman who believe it’s unappropriate to have physical contact with a man other than their husband or male relatives, this is literally being asked to violate their marriages same as if their boss demanded a blow job before signing their paycheck. The tradiational etiquette has always been a gentleman waits for a woman to extend her hand to avoid this problem or if he inadvertently mistakes a woman for a man and extends his hand he apologizes immediately and everyone goes on about the day.

Okay. And exactly what does it mean that the university found someone on that list responsible. The university didn’t publish the list so it’s possible (quite likely) that the student version of ZPG Zealot shaded the truth just a tad (100%). I really wouldn’t take some lunatic’s version of events as reliable reporting.

And the only reason you didn’t get prosecuted for assault is your gender, probably.
