who pays for product tie-ins?

Who pays for all those toys, tickets etc that I get in the cereal packets, McDonalds etc. Is it the cereal company, trying to get more people to get their gloop, or is it the movie company etc, trying to hype their product?

I think it’s mainly the movie company trying to get you to go to the show. But since Kellogg’s or McDonalds also benefits from marketing tie-ins, they may foot some of the bill.

Maybe somebody who actually knows will wander in here and say for sure.

At the grocery store the other day, I saw a display of “ET - The Extra-Terrestrial” cereal. Not Corn Flakes with ET on the front: a special cereal called “ET - The Extra-Terrestrial”. I wonder what was in it? Reeses’ Pieces?
