Who put that there? Oh, I guess it was me

I got my annual “free” turkey today (let Big Brother follow your every supermarket purchases for six weeks, and, woo hoo! $15 worth of poultry!), so I had to rearrange everything in the freezer to make room for it. There was plenty of stuff in there I’d bought and forgotten about (a nice stash of Boca Burgers, for instance; a pie crust and some spinach – hm, looks like quiche is in my immediate future) – plus a huge honkin’ ham bone. I have zero recollection of where this might have come from. I usually “do” one ham a year (the annual spring promotion at the Big Brother Market), after which I segue immediately into a nice pot of bean soup. So I’m guessing this was a bone sans ham – which must mean that someone gave me a hambone. Who? and why did I freeze it, instead of making soup right away?

Ah well – looks like bean soup is on the menu for this weekend – how do you think that would go with spinach quiche?

Spinach quiche for breakfast, bean soup for lunch!

You’re welcome!

I’ll have to sort out my freezers, too. My mom has 10# of shrimp for me, plus a ham butt if I want it, which I do. The thing is, both freezers are pretty full (each is part of a fridge/freezer, so it’s not like I have a deep freeze that’s loaded…) Then again, with the kids here, I’ll be able to cook and use up some of the food. I hope.

I should probably quit shopping for a while and let our supply be eaten down.

You can freeze spinach?

Or is this the already frozen Block O’Spinach? TM

Already frozen.

There’s a hell of a lot less sand, and it works fine for quiche.

Yep. Last winter I grew a buttload of spinach, and I spent a whole day picking, washing, microwaving and packing it in freezer ziploc bags. It’s one of the few vegetables that freeze relatively well. We ate the last of it in about August or so, and the new crop is starting to produce well right now.

Two things I learned on the SDMB today:

How to freeze fresh spinach.

 and

Bunches of spinach is called a buttload.

I love this place.

This conjured up some trippy images in my mind’s eye, let me tell you.

And I loved every one.
