I don’t know how widespead these commercials are but…
There is a commercial for Verizon Wireless that is on all the freakin’ time in Asheville, NC these days. I’m assuming that it is playing elsewhere as well, but I am not sure if the commercials are national. The music in the commercial is a cover of “People Got To Be Free.” Originally by the Rascals possibly. The version in the commercial has a female singer. It is possible that this version of the song was done specificly for this commercial by studio musicians and vocalists. However, I would like to explore the possibility that this song was done by some little known band with a cute singer who’s CD I could buy. Does this commercial or song sound familiar to anyone?
Try http://www.allmusic.com for any music question you might have. You can search by song title, and find all of teh artists who have recorded songs by that title. That way you can see if it is indeed a cover version done by an established, but unknown band with a perky lead singer or if it was just in fact a studio session done specifically for the commercial.

if your thinking of the same commercial I am…pretty sure u are…then there’s the possibility it could be Joni Mitchell. You said it had a female voice, and my mom and I both were actaully discussing it yesterday because we weren’t quite sure if it was her or not.
Now, either it’s not Joni Mitchell because she didn’t do the commercial (I don’t think she’d sell out like that - she just came out with a new album) or it’s not even Joni Mitchell because I’m thinking of a different commercial than you…well, hope I gave you even a small clue.
That is definately NOT Joni Mitchell singing in that commercial and really doesn’t sound anything like her. I too have wondered who that snappy little singer is. She is dynamite, but I doubt if the song was already recorded before the ad agency found it. Still, the girl’s got a name, and I hope somebody can come up with it. Not to highjack, but there is another commercial jingle that catches me when I hear it. It’s for the Mazda Protege. Nice, tight little beat with spoken lyrics in front. It reminds me of a British punk rocker from the early eighties - Brian Briggs. Either he’s doing commercial tracks now, or somebody found a copy of one of his vinyl albums and told the jingle writer, I want something that sounds just like this.
The song was originally reorded in the 60’s by The Young Rascals, who changed their name to The Rascals in an effort to sound less dippy. It didn’t work. This girl, however, has put an edge on this song that never existed before. The question remains, did the cover exist with a whole band before the ad, or did the ad agency create the whole deal.
if this is the ad campaign that you’re talking about, it has a number to call for both the ad agency responsible and verizon. but i don’t feel like wading through voice mail limbo myself.
