Who the hell is Jim Piper and why is he sending popups to my machine?

Okay, so I visit a site I often go to. Nothing illegal or immoral, just a BB site a friend heads on one of those “free” sites. Of course they’re not free; they force ads on you.

Still OK with that (I can get rid of them), until now. One of the popups comes with a soundtrack. I hear this music, and find that the popup has opened behind my browser and is playing this music.

Whether I wanted music or not is beside the point. (I don’t.) The point is that it is far more intrusive, IMHO, than an ordinary, silent popup.

Anyway. The culprit is, according to the “hosted by” line, Jim Piper of rhinosystems.com. Well, Jim, I think your music scheme sucks. And I certainly will not patronize anybody who advertises on your server. Got it, Jim?

Good. Now let me get back to my regular surfing.

Rhinosystems is the next generation of lets act like we are hip by using fancy systems we know nothing about business model. They are also responsible for a major spam incident about a month ago on netscape mail.

Eh. Just jack your browser’s security settings up to “high.” That cuts popups right out. When you do so, you’ll probably want to go and reenable cookies, though, otherwise your boards won’t work…
