Who translated the US edition of Venus in Furs?

I just recently started reading Venus in Furs, via public domain translation. One thing I found interesting about this edition, which seems to be the one still in print, is the translator, a ‘Fernanda Savage’ of Atlantic City, NJ, 1921. I’m really curious who this person was and what sort of climate drew them to translate this famous work of 19th century smut. Anyone heard of them?

On a side note, why hasn’t there been a newer translation? 90 years is a little too long and the Fernanda translation is definitely a pretty archaic read in parts.

Penguin released a new translation by Joachim Neugroschel in 2000.

See here. I don’t know why Amazon doesn’t carry it. (At least, it doesn’t show up when I search for it on Amazon.)

Ah, your first introduction to the lovely Laura Antonelli. I would certainly recommend her other films. Especially the comedies Malicious (aka Malizia) and Il merlo maschio (aka Secret Fantasy).

The Italians excel at comedies.

English translation of their films is always a bit problematic.

And they put a bare-breasted woman on the cover. Wonder how many people buy the book without really understanding what happens inside.

The Penguin book is available on Ebay.

When I posted earlier it was 5am and I was groggy. I misread and assumed you were watching the film.
