This is going to be a stellar weekend for WB, possibly the best on record for years to come, if not decades. $158 million is the number to beat by the Dark Knight.
I think it will surge right past this.
All anyone and everyone ( who is cool and withit) is talking about is HP7.2 .
For reference, earlier openings were 125, 78, 77, 94, 103, 88, and 90. So I seriously doubt it will break 130, especially since it’s not an extended weekend - the previous one was quite a large spike and probably represents nearly all we can expect in terms of extra turn out.
As far as overall take, previously we had 295, 302, 292, 250, 290, 262, 318. Unlike opening weekends, total take doesn’t seem to have the same sharp upswing. So people might be rushing out the first week, but overall not many more people are going than previously.
This morning the local news reported that there were 28,000 seats available at the various theaters in the area who had midnight showings, and that they had all sold out.
I’m not so sure about that. HP7B is on a boatload of screens and - importantly - is in 3D, so ticket prices will be higher than they were for The Dark Knight. If I have to guess though… I think it’ll be close, but not pass TDK.
Boxofficemojo says anything under $147 million would be a disappointment(though it notes that this is really the 2nd half of a movie and it can not lose money).
Variety is reporting that HP7B just destroyed the old record for midnight sales with “a ginormous $43.5 million from more than 3,800 U.S. locations.” “Twilight - Eclipse” had the old record at $30 million.
ETA: Of course, for the record, we’re talking about North American Domestic box office for all these numbers. HP7B has already done a further $82.5 million in just 2 days in “foreign markets”.
I just wanted to say that HP7.2 is playing on *15 *screens at *one *local theater (the AMC on 42nd St) including showings at 3:00am(!!) tonight, late Friday night/Sat morning! I’ve never seen that before!
Still early, and these are only projections, but Box Office Mojo is saying that it’s going to be $168,550,000! Way to go Harry - it couldn’t have happened to a nicer wizard.
edit - wow, what timing.
These are amazing numbers ; 476 million world wide is insane and I wonder what the second-largest WW opening is. Harry Potter is a global cultural phenomenon unlike anything ever seen before, at least for films and books; LOTR for example didn’t have quite the same appeal in Asia.
I don’t think this will seriously challenge Avatar at the top either in the US or WW but it should challenge Titanic for the no.2 spot. I haven’t visited the BOM forums for a while but I imagine they are going crazy over there.
