A couple of popular ska songs in their day mentioned ‘Rudy’. There’s A Message To You, Rudy and Rudy, Do You Know. Is this a reference to an actual person? Was Rudy just a popular name at the time? Who was Rudy?
Don’t forget Rudy Can’t Fail by the Clash.
Is it Rudy who forced his way into playing Notre Dame football and later became a speaker?
I don’t think it’s that Rudy. If it’s Ska music, it’s probably a reference to ‘Rude Boys’, which was, I believe, a sub-culture amoung black Immigrant teens in England. I don’t have any hard core cites, just a few remembered references from films of the time.
That sounds more likely. For example, the Specials’ song is about sending a message to Rudy to stop making trouble.
Anyone have collaboration for the hypothesis?
I was always under the impression it was rude boy as well. Wikipedia on Rude Boys seems to agree.
Groovy. Thanks.
