I’m not sure any of these minor characters pass the ‘heartbeat away’ test.
Well, if the Democrats want to be the party of gun control(which they already mostly are), adding Chris Murphy to the ticket would cement that.
It’s gonna be Kaine. She needs a somewhat bland white man with not a whole lot of baggage or ability to steal her limelight, and the guy who gets to pick his replacement is a Dem, and not only that, but an old-time Clinton friend.
If she works out some sort of deal with Bernie, I could see it still being Tom Perez-- he has progressive street cred and experience in the executive branch, law experience and experience with economics (seems pretty ready to step in).
It will not be Elizabeth Warren. She’d steal Hillary’s thunder too much, and Hill’s not about to let that happen as she stands on the precipice of history. And the guy who gets to pick her replacement is a Republican. It also won’t be Sherrod Brown, although he’s likelier than Warren.
My prediction today: It’s Kaine, with a slight chance of Perez.
He also seems uninterested.
John Hickenlooper strikes me as worth something of a look. Successful entrepreneur before he became Mayor of Denver and popular with both liberal progressives while being seen as something of a “business Democrat” who’s finishing up his second term as the Governor of Colorado. Yes, “favorite sons” are overrated but Colorado and much of the mountain West are going to be battleground states.
Every body is uninterested until they’re asked.

It’s something like a papal conclave. People who look like they actually want the job are disqualified. Only somebody who can successfully look like he’d be be stepping *down *to it is a possibility.
I like Hickenlooper very much, and only wish he had a shorter/less silly name.
One of my sons is good friends with a close relative of Sherrod Brown. Brown has, I have it on good authority, told his family and close friends that he is not at all interested in becoming VP, because he never wants to be even potentially someday having to send U.S. military personnel off to die.
Here’s CNN on Hillary’s deep bench of potential running mates (they used the wrong picture of Tim Kaine, though): http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/03/opinions/clinton-vp-list-opinion-julian-zelizer/index.html
Fuck, no wonder I didn’t get it.
It’s only a deep bench if its members are actually qualified. Many of those on the list are not.
She does have a deep bench to draw from, that much is true, but with the exception of Kaine, the buzz is around people who would never have been considered VP material in a normal election.
If only Chris Christie wasn’t Governor of New Jersey, I’d be all for Cory Booker. Just like being wary of having Elizabeth Warren, what with a Republican Governor just waiting to stack the Senate.
Even with Kaine that’s an issue though because Kaine is up for reelection in 2018. An open seat in a purple state in a midterm is almost like giving away a seat to the Republicans lately.
Clinton has a catch-22. She either picks someone that matters, and it hurts or carries the potential for hurt in terms of Senate numbers, or she picks someone who doesn’t matter and isn’t qualified.
Well, that’s not entirely true. Selecting Tom Vilsack carries no price, which is why it just makes sense. Wes Clark as well.
Hickenlooper would be a good choice because Donna Lynne would take over as Governor and she’s a Democrat.
Hickenlooper would be fantastic. I’m starting to wonder if Democrats just won’t take anyone seriously anymore unless they’ve served in DC.
From *your *POV?
I’m sure she’ll take that into account.
Secretary of Labor Tom Perez may be trying to raise his profile: Tom Perez, Potential VP Pick, Sells Clinton and Slams Trump on 'Meet the Press'
VP’s usually don’t matter much in the general, despite what people want to believe. Given Trump’s weakness, I want Clinton to pick someone super liberal to raise their profile and help the Democrats.
VP probably means more for Trump, as a popular choice might cause a lot of Never Trumpers to reevaluate the ticket.
For Clinton it only matters if she picks someone embarrassing. Which is why if she wants to go liberal as Yogosouth suggests, there really is only one choice: Liz Warren. She’s been in the spotlight long enough to know that she can handle it.
I’m pushing hard for Trump to pick Joni Ernst. Just another gun-totin’ Tea Party crazy Palin clone.
