The case opened a Pandora’s box of allegations about his past sex life and made him the first president ever interrogated under oath as a defendant in a civil lawsuit or before a grand jury as a possible criminal target. Jones v. Clinton also yielded a historic decision by the Supreme Court, which ruled 9 to 0 last year that even the chief executive can be sued. And it was the resulting search for evidence that led Jones’s lawyers to Monica S. Lewinsky and the chain of events that prompted Starr’s report to Congress alleging that Clinton committed 11 impeachable offenses.

The Jones case was finally thrown out of court when Scaife’s lawyers failed to produce any substance to it, despite the judge giving them every chance to come up with something.
I’m not a Sanders fan, but my wife is REALLY not a Sanders fan, and one of the reasons is that she sees a very strong misogynistic streak within his campaign. She would tell you it starts with the candidate himself and becomes more evident–and more offensive–in the behavior of some of his more enthusiastic supporters.
I’m not so sure…Some of the things she mentions, especially regarding Sanders himself, do not seem obviously anti-woman to me, and I’d argue that it’s only a very small group of out-there Sanders supporters that are responsible for the misogynistic comments etc. (Then again, I’m not female, and for what it’s worth my twenty-something son and his partner both agree with my wife regarding the candidate’s own actions and the number of Sanders fans who are motivated by anti-woman feelings.)
Anyhow, just to put this out there, my wife thinks having Warren as VP candidate would backfire if the purpose is to attract Sanders voters–that despite Warren’s progressive bona fides, an all-woman ticket is going to shut the door on any chance that some of these angrier male Sanders-ites will come around and support Clinton in the presidential race. A corollary to Richard Parker’s perspective above.
I wasn’t of voting age then, but I’d note that regardless of atwater’s intent, Republicans do not directly invoke race. Democrats do. If you vote Republican, there will be more Fergusons. “They’re tryin’ to put you all in chains!”
The Willie Horton ads, by contrast were at least ostensibly about Massachusetts’ insane furlough policy. I’m sure the fact that Horton was black was the point, but the ad campaign did address something that was actually important and non-racial.
No, but the people who hate African-Americans get what he’s about. His language mirrors the 1920s KKK, and white supremacists are getting on board with him. In 2016, it would be nice if candidates from our two major parties espoused beliefs that forced the white supremacists to look to wacky third-party candidates to meet their needs. But alas…
why? It would fight fire with fire; a GOP reality star, a Democrat reality star. Two billionaire businessmen. However, Cuban’s an actual businessman, not a glorified salesman like Donald Trump. He’s also younger than a lot of names being floated for VP, and younger than Hillary or Donald.
And if you needed anything to crystallize the GOP/Trumpist assertion that Hillary’s in bed with big money, Cuban would fill the bill precisely. Not gonna happen.
Neermind that he’s trying to pull a Bernie and use his supposed status to push her more toward the center as a prerequisite for his accepting.
Chuck Todd asked Hillary this morning about her potential running mate and what she thought would be the most important qualifications. She replied that being able to step into the role of President would be at the top of the list. Being able to cross the aisle and make deals, be an advocate for the administration, not unlike Joe Biden (she said specifically).
Which made me go check the term limit for V.P. Guess what, there are none.
I wonder if Joe would want to stay on the job? Saves packing and moving expenses.
Seriously, who better than Joe? He is well liked and he is a direct link to Obama’s legacy - a coat tail that Clinton has been riding for a while now.
