Who will/should Obama pick as running mate?

I think Obama really messed up big time on this one. Biden comes across as a whiny, arrogant little prick (not saying he really is, but the perception) and come November, I think you will have people trampling over each other to vote for McCain out of spite…

Did you see him on the daily show during the primary season? He seemed relaxed, charming, intelligent, and generally with it. He had a good sense of humor too. I would have preferred Kathleen Sebelius, but I am fine with Biden. I think he is a far better choice than Kaine.

Hmmm, Biden was not one of my favorites. I guess I’ll take a wait and see approach. I’m hoping he’s the Judge Bork Biden and can be a good attack dog.

Still, I don’t see him running for president after Obama’s 8 years are up.

Also, a 3 AM text message?

But he was prepped for that. Wait until he’s at a campaign event where a heckler says something. Watch Biden crash and burn.

I think he will give us a memorable quote or two that will be replayed in years to come, much like Dean’s scream.

What lee said.

And for those of you familiar with Josh Marshall’s “bitch slap theory” of politics, I think Biden was one of the two possibilities - the other being Clinton - that would have said to the GOP, “we ain’t gonna take anything lying down this time, bucko.” If you recall, Biden was the one who nailed Rudy to the wall with the “noun, verb, 9/11” tag.

I’m pleased that it’s Biden. Let’s roll.

Well he certainly balanced the ticket.

Obama is hard to dislike personally…Biden is another story.

By what measure? It’s been tried exactly four times since WWII, and two of them involved Adlai Stevenson.

Which statistic, in and of itself, establishes that it’s not a good idea. People tend to do what is successful in politics, or at least try to do so, and if they don’t generally stick two senators on the ticket, it’s for a good reason.

All I can say is, I hope that the pick solidifies states like Pennsylvania and Ohio. If not, then it’s got a lot of downside (what happened to a new approach to politics?), and not much other upside, IMHO.

Biden brings the experience and intelligence but he screams Beltway. He’ll be a good attack dog but he will make a gaffe or two in the process.

An adequate choice. No more than adequate though.

Couldn’t have said it any better. I agree. Of course not everyone is going to like the choice, but as long as the majority do and we see them stroll into the white house…I don’t care.

Except for the line “But that won’t hurt all that much because voters are smart enough to forgive the genuine flaws of genuine people.” :dubious: The silver dollar story might sell well.

I still would have liked Richardson, but I’m glad he’s got someone with a higher belt in DC-Fu than he has to back him now, apparently. I have to wonder who Hillary would have chosen (Bill? Would that be legal?) The text message was like a weird political Christmas: will it be underwear or a new bike? And I can’t see Joe Biden (and it’s weird how it said"Joe" on the text message. Trying to make his feel everyday already?) teaming up with a Commie Muslim so hopefully it will derail some silly conspiracies. Yahoo’s saying stuff like the pick shows a “lack of confidence”.

The names don’t flow like magic, but hey, at least Obama’s done Biden his time.
Sorry, sorry.

ObaMa ObaBee ObamaBiden Tra la la life goes on.

Sing it every one!

Biden is a disappointing pick. He will hurt more than help. Gaffe City, here we come!

I gave it to you and you were to thick to handle it. You just know better don’t you.

I been watching Biden highlights and he looks like a good choice.

He can calm down hard working white people, his son is going to Iraq, he has more foreign policy experience than McCain, and he isn’t a pussy.

There are more qualified people to run the country than Biden, sure, but I think if we just want to win the campaign, Biden is the best choice.

And it didn’t work.

Just on practical terms, two Senators on the ticket has this problem:

  1. They represent ‘inside the beltway’ politics, which people tend to dislike in Presidents, which is why they often vote in outsiders.

  2. Congress’s approval ratings are at historical lows (lower than Bush’s), and now you have two people from that illustrious group on the ticket together.

  3. One reason Senators tend to not do well is because they have a long voting record they have to explain. Having two on the ticket opens them up to scrutiny on votes where they differed, and Biden has a long, long legislative history which is bound to have a few votes in it he’d like to take back.

  4. Neither of them has executive experience. Both of them have spent most of their adult lives in government. Americans tend to not like that a whole lot, either.

  5. Choosing a Senator deprives him of picking someone who can help carry a state he wouldn’t otherwise carry. Biden’s from Delaware, which is already safely Democrat.
This says nothing against Biden as a person - I’m talking about the pure strategy of the pick. On paper, it has some liabilities.

As I suggested in the other thread, every option was no better than adequate.

I am a little disappointed with this choice too, although among Sebelius, Kaine, Biden and Bayh, there is no outstanding choice. I have to ask, what happened to Richardson? Why wasn’t he chosen? Did he just decline the option? Has he said too many bad things about Obama during the campaign? He would have been absolutely perfect, IMHO.

The rumor is that Richardson had too many skeletons in the closet including a zipper problem. Democrats=blow job is probably why Obama passed.

Well, I think Biden is a good choice, even if it is putting the one 19 years elder in the VP slot.

I am disappointed. Disappointed that Samantha Power is ineligible (maybe she’ll get a State Dept job?); and as someone from near Kansas, a bit let down that it wasn’t Sibelius (maybe she’ll get a DC job after her term as governor is up). I still think picking a woman (not HRC, she’s seen as a certain man’s wife) would have been a good move. Or at least I would have liked it.

But I’m not sad that it’s Biden, beyond the fact that he goes from being a committee chairman to President of the Senate & holder of warm bucket of piss. If anything does happen to Obama, Biden’s who I really wanted to be POTUS anyway.
