Who won a music award (Grammy?) for best songwriting, but only wrote one line..

Of the song?

The chorus goes “something something something New York City…”

That’s all the hints I have, but I need to know the song…

“Arthur’s Theme (best that you can do)” by Christopher Cross.

The line is “When you get caught between the moon and New York City”.

Thank you!

Cancels a million mp3 downloads of songs with “New York City” in them…

Mr. Blue Sky correctly identified the song.

It falls to me, then, to point out that neither this song nor its composers won any Grammys. “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes won for both record of the year and song of the year in 1981. Al Jarreau won best Male Pop Vocalist for “Breakin’ Away.” Arthur’s Theme was nominated in all three categories but did not win any Grammys. It did win an Oscar that year.

I should also point out that it was not Cross who contributed just one line, but Peter Allen. Cross wrote the lyrics with Carole Bayer Sager, and she remembered the line from an unrecorded song she and Allen had written years earlier. Burt Bacharach wrote the music.

A lot of websites I’ve seen credit this song as Christopher Cross’s big break, but he did win five grammys for his 1980 debut album. Despite such a strong debut, AllMusic.com reports : “somewhat amazingly, he never returned to the Top 40 again.”

The song did win an Academy Award for Best Song. Perhaps that’s the award you’re thinking of, instead of the Grammy.
