Is there a particular reason for Haley? I thought at first she sounded reasonable, but then took the Trumpian turn towards the end.
Sasse talks a good game and is much less of a corrupt lying weasel than the vast majority of his party peers, but when the votes are down he still toes the line. I’d rather have someone like Amash or McMullin who put their money where their mouths are, even if I disagree with many of their policy positions.
On the Democratic side I thought Schweitzer would be a good choice but he doesn’t want the job, and Duckworth needs a little more time in Congress. I’m struggling to get excited about any of the most obvious choices, although pretty much anyone would be better than the current incumbent.
If I could wave a magic wand and put someone in the White House without any party affiliation, there’s only one choice for me - someone who:
-
is smart, shrewd, self-deprecating but no-nonsense, focused and talented;
-
grew up seeing extreme poverty but has worked their way up to global success;
-
has set up multiple initiatives to help people in need in a way that gets them to help themselves;
-
advocates kindness but not foolishness, hard work but not slavery, and self-reliance but not isolationism; and
-
appeals to all Americans, from the campiest drag queens to the strictest religious fundamentalists, and created the only place in America where they can intermingle in peace.
Sadly though, I don’t think Dolly Parton would want the job either.
