I’m a bit tired from furniture assembly over the weekend, so I’ll let Democratic Underground do the rant for me today. From this week’s Top Ten Conservative Idiots of the Week:
Can’t wait to see the Bush apologists defend this one. Though I suppose it could be worse – the backup plan could be for George to give his acceptance speech at the local veterans’ cemetery, with the graves of the 500+ U.S. servicemen killed in Iraq as a backdrop…
I object! You’ve obviously never heard any memeber of the Bush admistration speak. The words… “Since the events of 9/11…” has been used to justify just about everything the adminstrations done since that day.
bin Laden in chains behind the candidate, breaks free and terrorizes the city. Finally cornered at the top of the Empire state building, it is left to the intrepid president to climb aboard his trusty Sopwith Camel and dispose of this menace to the Homeland.
I doubt something as frankly crass as Bush making his acceptance speech at ground zero will make it through the first round of public scrutiny. The convention organizers would be wise to not even bring it up. I suspect a denial that they were even thinking about it is in the offing.
Ohhhhhh my. Well, never fear. I suspect many of us in NYC are quite looking forward to giving that convention of GOP hypocritical bastards (sorry for the tautology…) the um, vociferous reception their convention deserves. If they take their dog and pony show to Ground Zero? Hoo doggies, that oughtta be like putting a match near a powder keg. The 9-11 families and their supporters – whose questions Bush refuses to answer – won’t take that outrage lying down.
The first thing I would wonder is: Why would the Republicans pick New York City for a convention? Even Philadelphia last year was a strech. Usually, you want your convention in a friendly area. Houston, Dallas, San Diego all make sense. Of course, the Republicans did hold their 1980 convention in Democratic Detroit.
My guess is that Bush/Rove will be smart enough not to try to pander to the Sept. 11 symbolism too much.
You honestly can’t imagine why the GOP chose NYC for their convention? Really?
They chose NYC for the same reason they spout the same answer every time their numbers go down and every time someone asks a tough question and every time a reporter is unpatriotic enough to express doubts about the erosion of civil liberties.
They chose NYC so they could trot out all those ghosts who died in the towers on 9/11, the same way they’ve trotted them out in their Republican-forged chains like so many undead Kunta Kintes countless times since that day.
The greatest tragedy of 9/11 is the hay that the Republican party has made of those dead.
No, it was done to help pump millions of dollars into our economy. It was also due to the aggressive efforts of a Republican mayor and governor that were desperate to help a city that had lost billions of dollars in revenue in 2001. The Dems vied to come here too but were pretty disorganized about it, and they’re apparently way behind in their prep in Boston.
They’re quite welcome to most people because they’ll spend like sailors and the city will get a nice spiffing-up for them; we love to show off the city and at least the demonstrations will be amusing. In fact, this Democrat would love to be a volunteer tour guide. Taking a bunch of Mississippi Baptists to brunch on Christopher Street will be the first thing I do
It had better be awfully vociferous if you want it to be heard from the Free Speech Area, which will probably be the inside of a small warehouse in New Jersey.
My guess is that Bush himself will stay slightly distant from it, while the convention organizers and everyone else involved will lay it on as thick as possible.
Wow. You’re right. Essentially the Republican platform comes down to “Vote for Bush. Remember September 11th”
And for the Dem front runner it’s, “Vote for Kerry. He served in 'Nam, then protested it.”
And for Clinton’s campaign it was “You dummies don’t even realize that we had domestic and imported terrorism under my watch, but I was at least lucky enough to see the towers stand”
So, whether you stand next to images of a national tragedy, or stand next to them and then denounce them, or never stand next to them at all, you have an angle.
And moving the convention to the week right before 9/11 – an unprecedented late date never seen in American politics before – was just a coincidence as well?
Nah, I still say it’ll be “Vote for Bush or terrorists will kill your family! Booga booga!”
Anyone who thinks there’s anything wrong with a veteran protesting against a war needs an education in what “freedom” is all about.
I’d like to note that the Republican Party has never held its national convention in New York state since, well, the beginnings of the party. For comparison purposes, the Democratic Party has held its national convention in New York state five times.
Hate to be cynical about it, but I’m afraid this really is all about taking advantage of 9/11 for political gain. Not too shocking at any rate.

Ahem. rjung, boy, that has to be a record for strawman construction. I don’t believe I said there was anything wrong with it. I said it was an angle. And it is…an angle in a campaign. I made no judgements.
I know what freedom is about, but care not to defend a strawman you constructed for me.
Bush is a twit…he has only 9-11 and fear to get him a pass. No doubt. But that’s a product of being a politician, rather than being a republican.
It wasn’t for you. As you said, it’s a campaign angle, and anyone stupid enough to (a) use it or (b) believe it needs a lesson in American Civics 101 toot sweet.
or even “tout de suite” …hey guys, don’t make me start a pit thread on you!
If you’re gonna use a foreign expression to be hip, at least spell it correctly.
(This is directed mainly towards Elucidator, who IIRC was the first to butcher the phrase…and whom I otherwise hold as a shining beacon of all that is right with the SDMB).
