I went to that website they’re advertising on TV to find out if anyone was interested in if I was still alive.
The TV ad said “find out FREE!” Well, it isn’t free, (that’s why I didn’t add a link.) but they do tell you how many people are looking, where they are and their ages, dribbling the information into one’s inbox when one chooses not to subscribe.
I’ve lost track of my (half) siblings and many friends over the years. My fault. I tend to not look back and I’ve always had the notion that, as soon as I leave a room, I’m forgotten.
So, when the site said 178 people were looking for my previous name, I was curious. Unfortunately, I can’t afford the $20 a months, for 2 years just to quell a bit of curiosity.
Is there any truly free site that puts people together that have lost track?
Have you found or looked for lost friends or loved ones successfully?
I did that Classmates site and had about the same results. To sign up was free, but then they kept claiming I had people looking my name up. I don’t believe it for a minute. They could have found me without paying. I have my maiden name and I’m right there in the phone book.
I paid that US Search site 50 dollars years ago to try to find my daughter’s father. All I got was a HUGE list of people by that name in the country. Something I’d already found on my own. I gave them so much information! His last known addresses, his social security number, birth date, many family members names. Nothing. I wasn’t going to call all 100+ numbers in the first place. That was why I paid them fifty bucks! I’ve heard others have a lot more success with them.
More recently I just did a little FB search and there was his family, all online except him. They have no idea where he is either but my daughter gained a huge family within days, all for free.
If you have a full name and a general idea of where they live now, you can find a surpising amount of info for free. Most county websites in the US now offer links to property information that is searchable. With only a name you can find all property owned, with only an address you can find out who owns the property. Most court records of current cases are searchable. Birth and death records are on line. You don’t have to pay any of the search sites, if you are patient and know where to look.
Look yourself up on Google and Spokeo. If you can find about yourself, so can others. I’ve even been able to find friends who have lived off the grid for decades.
Well, my sibs, except one, are, or at least were, a bunch of low lifes that rarely had a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, so property information isn’t much help. I have no idea where the one brother that I miss might be living, it’s been 12 years since I last saw him.
needscoffee, I’ve done that. The only thing I found was a bunch of bad mouthing about a post I’d made here.
My wife dragged me kicking and screaming onto Facebook last year. I initially only joined it because she needed points for some silly mafia thing and planned on never really using the thing again, but then I reconnected with a couple dozen friends I haven’t seen in 20+ years. As much as I still dislike Facebook in some ways, it seems to be better than any of these classmates or friend finder sites at finding your old friends.
Me too. Someone did find me last year. He posted information on Craigslist and some “Good Samaritan” who doesn’t know either of us decided to help him out. Wonder if it occurred to that guy that some people don’t want to be found?
I had a couple of creepy phone calls and that’s been all. I changed my email address and parking spot at work after that, but the fact is this guy knows exactly where to find me at any time.
