Alls I gots to say is that I love this song.
I was born standing up
And talking back
My daddy was a green-eyed mountain jack

Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my pa-pa, he always understood.
Eddie Fisher, et al *Oh, My Papa
Daddy sang bass,
Mama sang tenor.
Me and little brother would join right in there.
Singing seems to help a troubled soul.
One of these days and it won’t be long.
I’ll rejoin them in a song.
I’m gonna join the family circle at the Throne.
No, the circle won’t be broken.
By and by, Lord, by and by.
Johhny Cash - Daddy Sang Bass
Maybe you’re just like my father-- too bold.
Prince– When Doves Cry
Mama dabbed a little bit of perfume on my neck,
And she kissed my cheek.
Then I saw the tears wellin’ up in her troubled eyes,
As she started to speak.
She looked at our pitiful shack,
And then she looked at me and took a ragged breath.
She said your Pa’s runned off and I’m real sick,
And the baby’s gonna starve to death.
Fancy, Reba McEntire
…and when he comes to call
my pa ain’t got a word to say
guess it’s cause he’s just as wild
in his younger days
– Someday Soon, Judy Collins
I checked several lyrics sites through Google, and it appears the word is indeed “alone.”
(But hey, at least you’ve got one for the next “misheard” lyrics thread, eh?)
shelbo, I know what you mean. I can still hear it in my head as though it were on the charts yesterday.
There seems to be a consistent theme to these lyrics: Daddy was either a] a feckless card playing drunk, or b] a blue-collar wage-slave.
5:35 at the corner of Franklin and Warner
A blue station wagon comes slidin’ around the corner
And on down Franklin Pike Circle all you’re seeing is a streak of blue
Pulls in the driveway at the corner of 1432
And he says “My back aches and my head hurts and I don’t feel like talkin’
Don’t want to go to the show to see Dr. Zhivago, don’t wanna take the dog out walkin’
I wanna sit right here in this easy chair, it’s been a jungle all day, you know.”
The 1432 Franklin Pike Circle Hero is home.
He’s the 1432 Franklin Pike Circle Hero
And you can see him every weekend with a car full of kids and sno-cones
The people 'cross town don’t know his name but on Franklin Pike Circle he’s king
The 1432 Franklin Pike Circle Hero
- Bobby Russell
Drunk Daddy broke my fingers
Drunk Daddy done kicked my head
Drunk Daddy smashed my sister
Turned my whole world red
“Drunk Daddy”-- Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
I agree, there aren’t too many “Daddy” lyrics that are happy ones. Huh.
You run on a little tough luck baby
Don’t you sweat it
Everything is waiting inside for you
You know I got it
Come and get it
Who’s your daddy, who’s your baby?
Who’s your buddy, who’s your friend?
Who’s Your Daddy? Toby Keith
How about that Paul Simon one “There will never be a father who loves his daughter more than I love you.”
I don’t want to quote the whole thing but “Used Car” by Springsteen has some of my favorite lyrics, and while you’re there, “My Father’s House” fits too.
(Speaking of Paul Simon…)
My father was a fisherman
My mama was a fisherman’s friend
And I was born in the boredom and the chowder
So when I reached my prime
I left my home in the maritimes
Headed down the turnpike for New England, sweet New England
Paul Simon, Duncan
Oh Daddy by Adrian Belew
