Tonight’s episode was better. The musical bits have always been the stronger acts, and it’s always hilarious watching Charlie Sheen not have any idea what’s going on.
The GSN site has mucho clips. They also have what they call the entire first episode, but it’s only 20 minutes long and sections of it are in the clips.
20 mins is pretty much an entire episode once you take out the breaks.
It kind of sucked.
Didn’t see his new show, but when he was on Community a year or so ago, he looked not just skinny but kinda sickly. For whatever reason, he looks better with a little meat on his bones.
Useless post without explanation and examples.
I have only seen the first episode and I thought it was pretty good. It has the potential of Whose Line and I’m curious to see if the show to see if they can get the “big names” most of the shows.
By Big Names, I mean:
Ryan Stiles
Colin Mochrie
Brad Sherwood
Greg Proops
and maybe Chip.
I agree, but he looks better now. I think he just hadn’t built up enough muscle yet and wasn’t wearing the best clothes. He still looks like he could add a little muscle, but he doesn’t seem unhealthy.
Anyways, I just finished the first episode. It seems they run fewer and longer gags, and the pianist really classes things up. I don’t really like the constant camera movements so much, though. It feels like they are just filming a live show, rather than being a TV show. (And maybe that’s the point).
I think it is the point and I would love being at that show. Anyone know how many episodes they have filmed?
It honestly felt a LOT like the ‘Whose Live’ show that Greg, Ryan, Chip, and Jeff did. I think it’s even the same pianist they used.
I was/am a big fan of Whose Line, and I was pumped to see Improv-a-Ganza. I’ve caught a couple of episodes so far, and they’ve been terribly disappointing.
There have been way too many musical bits so far, and they’ve been terribly unfunny. WTF was even supposed to be funny about the bits they came up with for the “shot him in Kenya” song? I’ve found myself fast forwarding through them.
Even the stuff that used to be reliable has been off. The sound effects with Ryan and Jeff Davis, IIRC? How many times did he go to the “making a muscle” well? And Collin and Ryan know that bit well enough to make it very organic. There was nothing funny about calling for a talk radio show or dictating the sound effects the way he did.
It seems that they are just pushing each bit way too far. The Playbook thing, for instance, was mildly funny but too forced and too long.
What they need are more of the “world’s worst” and those other bits that call for quick hitting improvised jokes.
I’ve watched all the episodes so far and I am loving the show.
I watched Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and last nights show all in a row and it is definitely a two or three hour live show that they chopped up into 30 minutes episodes. When the camera would pan the crowd I kept seeing the same people in the audience in different episodes.
And two words:
POWERFUL!
MAGNIFICENT!
I was laughing so hard during that sketch.
Seems like just the whose line gang having fun and getting filmed and paid. Works for me. Like all improv, there are occasional misfires, but overall I enjoyed. Drew’s gotten way better since Who’s line, almost holding his own with the others. (and they would’ve needed 2 more guys to do that flying kung fu kick gag back then! ) The lack of the who’s line game show shtick seems to open things up a bit more. Though I agree there’s too much music. Musical improv is hard as hell, and can be amazing when done well, but enough is sometimes enough.
Yeah, I agree. That “Dust Cloud” number (or whatever it was–the jazz thing) was interminable. It was cute for about 30 seconds, but they went on way too long.
I can’t decide yet if I like the show or not. I love Whose Line, but the spouse and I both agreed last night that the new show just seems like it’s trying way too hard compared to the old one. It’s like they’re trying to fill time, so they drag out the gags past where they’re funny.
So do they have kids in the audience all the time? Even when Charlie Sheen was there going on about cocaine and dead hookers?
I want to bump this thread to see if anyone else is watching and what their opinions are…
Personally I LOVE the show. I think it’s hilarious and I routinely laugh out loud at every episode. As great as Ryan and Greg and Colin are I really like the new guys. Jonathan Mangum is a great no-holds-barred physical guy. There is another new guy (Sean something?) that I really love because after every sketch he always shakes the hand the person he worked with, a subtle good job. I don’t think Kathy Kinney is very good at the improv but I must really confess I have a crush on the new girl Heather.
Anyone else watching?
I like the new girl, Heather. I think that she’s the funniest of all the improv gals that Drew’s Crew has worked with (Kathy Kinney, Julie Larson, Kathy Greenwood, Karen Murayama, etc.). Denny Siegel would be second.
I really want to like it as much as I liked Whose Line, but I don’t. They seem to have gotten rid of most of the rapid fire stuff–like the hat thing, or the hoedown–and those were the bits that I liked best. Still, it’s free and ad-free on the GSN site, so I’m game, still.
I agree, but Josie Lawrence is probably the funniest Whose Line lady. Think she only did one with Drew Carey, though.
I’m surprised Mike McShane never appears on these things. He was one of the core Whose Line guys on the British version and you never see him. I mean, I know he was Friar Tuck and I saw him in Office Space, but you never see him on improv stuff.
He was hilarious.
Who’s the guy who was never on the U.S. version of WLiiA? He’s pretty good.
