Why 10 cents in MI?

And is it legal to drive a semi over there full of cans/bottles?

  1. Because we rule.

  2. Yes, it’s legal. Watch Seinfeld.

  1. Every state makes its own rules as to what deposit to require for bottles and cans sold in that state. When you return the bottles and cans, you get the deposit back.

  2. Yes, but if I were a recycler in (Michigan?), I’d find a way to avoid paying you.

It is illegal to return and collect the deposit on bottles/cans purchased outside of Michigan

It may be legal to drive the semi full of cans/bottles here, but it’s illegal to then redeem them for the deposit. For 1, Mahaloth nailed it.

Ok, what if I lived close to the border, loaded up my trunk with a couple week’s worth of cans and on a short afternoon went over to MI to a grocery store. Do they have can police? State border checks for cans? Can detecting radar?
Or do they just not care that much about small time can smuggling?

I think the semi would be a great idea but you might need to disperse the bottles up between a few stores. My wife and I have taken shopping carts full of bottles back to the “do it yourself” section at the local Meijers. You just put the bottles in and get a reciept. Just keep it under 40 dollars and nobody will get suspicious.

Good to keep in mind if I’m ever in MI…

In the first thread Milossarian points out that:

Michigan has made it illegal to redeem a bottle or can not bought in Michigan, and any person attempting it is subject to a misdemeanor.

Same law in Michigan Legislature

I live in NY. Any beer I buy has that tantalizing prize of 10 cents in Michigan.

I ride my bike. Where is all that glass coming from? Oh… Coca Cola’s new lime-orange flavored thing that is not carbonated. Any number of Snapple bottles. Pepsi-blue-flat.

Make the deposit a buck! Yessiree - one Sacajaweya coin! And make it for any container - not just carbonated stuffs.

Less glass on the road and it won’t bother me none - I get my nickelsback. :b
