Why "3 Dog Night"

Anyone know why the band named themselves this?

I heard a UL that a “3 dog night” is a night so cold that you need three dogs under teh covers. Sounds fishy (hey honey, can bring a few dogs home tonight? I think it is going to be cold.)

Anyone know?

It’s an Australian expression, supposedly borrowed from Aborigines. Lacking blankets in most parts of the country Aboriginals traditionally used to sleep with dingoes to keep themselves warm. The story is basically how you describe it however the dogs weren’t under the covers, they were the covers. A three dog night is particularly cold. The story itself sounds like a UL to me since I can’t imagine that you’d wait until an especially cold night before getting all the blankets that you could.

Whether the story itself is true however there is no disputing that Aborigines used dingoes to keep themselves warm. As Eric Rolls said in his classic work on feral animals ‘They All Ran Wild’: “Women fed pups at their breasts… then calmly broke their forelgs so that they would have to remain in camp. The active dingoes were never more than half tame and always like to go bush. As they were living blankets it was essential to ensure a number stayed in camp. The more crippled dingoes an old woman had about her, the warmer she slept.”
