Why 99 seat theaters in LA?

I’m looking at booking a one man show here in Los Angeles (not performing, that’d be a friend of mine), and I keep hearing about 99 seat theaters, something to do with unions.

Anyone know more about that, and how it affects renting a space for a performance?
I don’t even know where to start looking (other than here). :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah. I know a whole hell of a lot. I have worked as a professional in LA theater for a number of years. Feel free to PM me if you want specific opinions and recommendations on spaces.

What do you want to know about the 99 seat theater contract? (Also known as the Equity Waver contract although that is no longer technically correct) At its essence it’s an equity thing that allows union members to act for little or no pay if the venue has 99 seats or less. So, unless you are looking to hire an equity SM or you are an Equity actor (I am assuming you are the one man in the show) it’s not really something you have to worry about too much.

Thanks, Naf. No, I’m not the performer. The performer is a friend of mine, lives in Texas, would fly out here for the event. He tours professionally, lots of theaters, colleges, tv appearances, etc. I don’t know if he’s union or not, or if that matters while booking him here in LA.

If he is union it will matter, you should probably find out. Also, I replied to your PM before I saw this post and I think I may have been assuming your budget was smaller than it is. Like I said in the PM, feel free to shoot me any questions you like. I’m more than happy to help.
