Why all the panic over the Flu?

The Media creates a sensation, and people lose their minds. 30000 plus people die every year from the Flu. Why are we collectively panicking over 50 or so people with an average age of 75? As of Friday, 3/4 of all Deaths in ONE State (Washington). 3/4 of THOSE were in 1 location (Nursing Home). The Response will cause more people to die than letting this run it’s course. Children out of school with no child-care available. Hoarding of necessary items. The list goes on, and on. Explain why, this is a hair-on-fire dire emergency. I get it, old people die when they get sick.

Because, in my understanding, COVID-19 is significantly more transmissible than the common flu, and significantly deadlier (10 times or more).

There is zero chance this can be explained to you.

People will try though. People will try…

There are literally hundreds of posts on this board explaining the difference, but the OP needed to plop this shit out.

Is coronavirus “questioning” a predominantly conservative thing, or something associated with conservatives these days?

Just in case this isn’t a troll post:

Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now

Nope, a predominantly moron thing.

It appears that you’re not only watching bad news sources, you’re not even watching enough bad news to understand what’s going on.

You do not get it, you are not interesting in getting it, and you never will get it. If there’s any just deity in this universe, such people will receive the consequences of their actions without infecting 10 others.

Sealioning as a distraction tactic. They’re asking questions not to hear the answers, but to challenge the premise.

From what I’ve discerned reading right wing bloggers, we liberals are creating a panic intentionally to hurt our dear leader.

So China and Europe (among others) are crippling their economies because US Media hoax. Gotcha. Hey, I have a nice bridge to sell - and for you, I have a special price!

I’ll give it a whirl.
This isn’t the flu. We know how to deal with the flu, we don’t know how to deal with this.
In addition, unlike the flu, no one is immune.

sigh :smack:

And speaking of the Spanish Flu, I believe it mostly struck the young and healthy. So not all flu species are the same.

The whole point of a “panic” is to nip this thing in the bud. Otherwise, you’ll have people yelling, “why didn’t they stop it when they had the chance?”

Yeah, whatever this thing is, I’m not convinced that it’s “just the flu bro!”

“The coronavirus is coming to you.
It’s coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly.
It’s a matter of days. Maybe a week or two.
When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed.
Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways.
Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die.
They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies.
The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today.
That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now.”

I reported the OP in hopes they’ll crack down on it or move it to the pit.

It’s true. It is all just a scam. Anyone who ‘dies’ is in on it. Go out and lick all the doorknobs you want.

The O.P. is a perennial drive-by poster.
I can guarantee he will never return to this thread.

Are you aware that in countries where swift action has not been taken the number infected roughly doubles every week? Are you likewise aware that up to 20% of people who contract this disease may require hospitalization and are at significant risk of death without it? Did you know that the death rate for this disease is approx. ten times the rate for seasonal flu? Are you aware that we have spare capacity for maybe 200,000 additional hospital patients at the moment? Can you understand that if indeed the number infected doubles each week, we will overwhelm that spare capacity in about six weeks? Would an excess number of deaths in which this disease is a contributing factor of somewhere between half a million and several million, in less than a year, concern you at all?

If all this is news to you, you may want to consider paying a bit more attention to what knowledgeable authorities such as the Centers for Disease Control are saying. See, you don’t even have to rely on the Fake News media to determine the facts.
