Why "All times are CT (US) -1 hours."

On the page of thread postings at SDMB, the message “All times are CT (US) -1 hours.” appears. I see that the times are indeed one hour behind the US Central time zone (if Daylight Savings Time is in effect, as it is right now). But isn’t this just “Mountain Time”?

The -1 is not the Daylight Savings version of regular Central Time; that would be +1.

This sort of looks like a computer generated message, such as might be used if users in different time zones saw different times posted, because it would be a little easier to insert a different numeral into the same string of characters than it would be to name the different time zones. But if that were the case I’d think I’d see the time for my own zone. And I don’t know how they’d know, anyway.

Why the odd way of writing the time zone?

The board (in Chicago) runs on a server that is on Central Time and, by default, that’s what you will see. There is an option to include a time offset for visitors in other time zones who want to see posts time stamped in their time. You can set that option in your user profile. Check yours and see if you don’t have a “-1” in the Time Offset box.

Actually, ‘CT (US) -1’ would be Eastern, not Mountain. Mountain is +1, Pacific is +2. Nothing to do w/Daylight Savings Time .

or maybe I’m just screwed up in the head… you were right. (I need to not figure time before I wake up…)

I beg to differ. When it’s 3:00 PM in Chicago, it’s 2:00 PM here in Montana. In other words, the time here is equal to the time in Chi-town, minus one hour. CT -1.

The only reason that they refer to Central Time specifically is that that’s where the server is.

Meanwhile, this is a question About This Message Board, so I’m moving it there.

It confused me when I registered (just now), but then
I’m from England! Can I have the time in Greenwich
Mean Time (GMT) please?..
…and what is a smilie, please?

CT is GMT -6, so GMT is CT +6. You should be able to change that in your profile settings.

A smilie is a little graphic of a face showing some emotion, like  or :(. There’s a link to how to create them on every “reply” page.
