I don’t know why I’m getting at least 50 pornographic spam crap messages daily, but I’m getting sick of it. I have never looked at a porn site, so I don’t know how some sick bastard has gotten my email. I’ve heard that responding to this crap just encourages them to send more, but I’m about to wear out the “delete” button. I think the scum who make their living out of sending this spam are true criminals and should serve time (and suffer some) they’re worse than cockroaches, at least a roach can be squashed underfoot.
The best is when I get ones for breast enlargement. I’m a guy. My e-mail address makes that obvious. I do get several penis enlargement ones along with the usual porn spam, though.
Hmm, I’m female and I get tons of “enlarge your manhood” garbage daily. I have a gender-neutral address, so I don’t understand…
Mailing lists are dirt cheap to buy. Thats probably why you, along with everyone else in the world, get a lot spam.
On a daily basis I get about 100 spam emails. Included in this are offers for penis enlargement, breat enlargement, viagra, rogaine, various other drugs, find-a-wife/gf/bf and for reasons which I can’t fathom a Septic Tank newsletter.
I get the inexplicable septic tank spam too. Weird. How many other people get Russian mail-order bride messages?
I get the penis-enlargement ones too, but I’ve never seen a breat-enlargement one. And it can’t be because they know I’m a guy, because I’m not a guy.
I used to get lots of ads referring to “barely legal teens” and also gay porn.
As far as non-porn a great many people seem to think that a) I own a house and b) I would be stupid enough to get a mortgage through some freak who spammed me on the net.
My mother got her first porn spam this past week and she was aghast. She knows not to open unfamiliar email, but the subjects on these messages really offended her. She told me she blocked the senders, but I know that doesn’t work - every one has a different originator.
Welcome to the internet, Mom!
I get ones for penis enlargements - I’m a girl!
Almost all of my porn spam involves either hapless Russian girls or disfunctional families. I’m bored with them, and will happily trade for mail-order brides and septic tanks.
I’ll trade you three penis enhancements and one breast enlargement for a hapless Russian girl. (Preferably, Anna Kournikova.)
To more serious matters:
Does clicking the “Remove me from mailing list” link have the desired effect, or does it only put your name on more lists?
I’ve just been deleting the things, afraid that clicking on the link would do more harm than good.
There does need to be a solution for this!
You should just be happy that you dont get spam of the “animal cracker” or rape variety.
YIKES!!! What did I ever do to deserve this?
I rarely want to strangle someone but these always drive me over the edge…
I’ve heard that clicking on the “remove me from mailing list” link just adds your name to the list of people who are actually willing to OPEN spam and thus you get more. So I just delete 'em unopened. I also make sure I don’t have any kind of preview pane on so there’s no way they can think I actually LOOK at the stuff.
I recently got a variation on the Nigerian scam, from China, I believe. Same scam, different day. And I get spam for hot young babes and penis enlargement. No septic tanks yet, though, I feel cheated as a homeowner!
A Staff Report by Doug, Should I “hit reply to be deleted from this mailing list”?, has some suggestions, including, “‘never hit delete, never hit reply’–trace the sucker, and hit them where it hurts.” The links there include SpamCop" which is strongly recommended by several anti-spam sites.
I’m afraid I can’t offer a testimonial yet, as I’ve really never gotten much spam for some reason. I think I got about three after I replaced my hard drive; I used the block sender feature on OE, and they seem to have stopped already.

I get tons but I filter it out pretty well using Agent for a newsreader.
There are certain programs, which I won’t mention, that can suck the email address from a web site, a forum, or newsgroups. I suppose that’s how they get them.
For the first time, a few days ago I got one which, when I clicked ‘delete,’ gave me a popup saying ‘The sender has asked to be notified when you read this message. Is this OK?’ I ckicked the ‘Hell, no’ button, but still… weird and annoying.
Probably just signing up for any old site caught you a lifetime of spam. Oh, and don’t ever click on those unsubscribe links… I made the mistake of doing this regularly a while back and was subsequently so swamped with spam that I had to abandon the mail account.
Recently I came across a possibly very good service for dodging spam. This site called tempmail which will create a temporary (1 to 24 hrs) mail address that forwards stuff to your regular account. Very good idea for signing up with sites that require a conformation e-mail (or whatever) but that you wouldn’t trust not to sell your addy to all unsundry.
I filter everything through SpamCop. Works good. Every day, there’s a good 100+ spam mails sitting in the filter and maybe one or two get through to my “clean” account.
And it seems to matter not nowadays who you are, what kind of e-mail provider you have or anything. Spam is all-pervasive and seems to be getting worse. Even “dummy” accounts I’ve set up on Popmail and places like that have been swamped with spam in a matter of weeks. And I’m very, very careful about where I put my e-mail address.
What I find fun, however, is to look at the list of subjects in the SpamCop filter list before I report and delete. I like to play “Sequential E-Mail Titles: The Spawn III”
For instance, right now, sitting there caught in my filter, are these gems:
I FKED MY DOG LAST NIGHT!!**
HALF OFF V1AGRA!!
Getting a good lender just got easy!!
Heck, some days it’s almost as much fun as the SDMB
You’re only getting 50 pieces of porn spam?
You are lucky.
I’ve written off my old email address cos I was getting so much porn spam. Got me a new one which seems spam free so far…
