For want of a hyphen my last paragraph makes no sense. That should read:

Of course part of Israel’s victory in '48 may have been less a failing of the Arab side but a desparate situation on the Israeli side. For Israel it was do or die … literally. The Arabs didn’t percieve that it was a war for survival for them; the Israelis did. Nothing like iminent death to motivate a fighting man.
