The only reason this is in the Pit is because it’s a question about board administration. I realize this is not a rampant problem, but it has caused me to be curious about procedure.
Why are some threads moved out of the Pit to MPSIMS and others are not? For instance, this kinda whiny rant about the neglect of family and friends on a “special day” is moved. This one is also about familial woes and feelings of mistreatment, and it gets moved pretty fast. Yet this one about a similar topic (bitching about family members arguably being assholes) stays and turns into a pile on of the OP, as so often threads like that do.
Is there some quantitative difference between the two threads that got moved and the one that didn’t which causes one to be left in the Pit to fester, and the others to be moved to a less contentious forum? I realize the wedding OP contains more profanity than the other two, but they all seem to be on the same basic topic and with the same intent, to vent about family troubles. I hope someone can articulate the difference for me, and the decision-making process. Thanks.
Not even going to get a mod response to this???
I’ll just hazard a guess and in doing so bump this for you.
They move the ones they actually see and those that get reported and it was probably too late already for the pile on example. I think that is what I have seen offered up before.
Three reasons, actually. The first is that I hadn’t looked at that thread up until now.
The second is that there’s no iron-clad policy that any rant that is not perfect Pit material must be moved out. If I notice a Pit thread that would be better served in MPSIMS, I’ll move it. If it’s borderline, I’ll leave it where it was started.
The third is that some rants, while specifically about people known or cared about only by the OP, may also be about topics that other people want to contribute their own ranting toward. The third link in the OP was about issues of weddings and etiquette, which people often have strong feelings about. So, while in this case I didn’t specifically look at that thread and decide if it should stay or be moved, if someone had reported it and suggested moving it, I’d have left it here.
Moving threads isn’t meant to be a commentary on the threads or adhering to perfect, consistent rules. We just try to shepherd things where we think they make the most sense, but it’s not always cut and dried. Depending on how many such threads we’ve been getting, sometimes I’ll prune aggressively, other times I’ll just leave things be. And of course, this all depends on whether or not I even notice them in the first place (I was playing poker most of yesterday).
My thoughts are the same as What Exits?. There has been a very vocal group of people that demand that their Pit not be sissy-fied with lots of MPSIMS content. I suspect that the threads that got moved were reported in time and the one that stayed either festered too badly or no one reported it.
Do you think whether you won or lost at poker would perhaps make a difference?
Well, it was strip poker, so no, not really.
