Lately another Chimpanzee attack, this time a former ‘pet’ that attacked someone and began eating her alive, starting with her face, eyes, and nose, jaw.
But I thought Primates besides humans are herbivores, except for grubs and such. Why eat another primate? I can see killing, but what’s with the near-cannibalism?
I’ve seen shows where groups of Chimpanzees or other primates/monkeys went hunting. They usually hunted members of a rival group, but they can be cannibalistic…
Killing and feeding are different instincts. While chimpanzee attack might involve chewing off parts of enemy body (most notably face, hands/fingers and genitals) it’s not about diet. It was clearly aggressive attack.
Now, if diet is involved, chimpanzees - as other posters noted - are omnivorous. They hunt for live prey, including other primates. They occasionally kill other chimpanzees, and instances of cannibalism were observed and documented. Some claims were made about chimpanzees snatching and eating human babies in Africa, but no documented case (as far as I know) was ever described. Though hunting and killing adult human would be very unusual behavior for chimpanzee, snatching infants is much more feasible, taking into consideration what we know about them.
Ok. I googled about those reports, and seems like baby-snatching in Uganda is quite well documented. Apparently chimps indeed hunted and killed at least 8 human babies.
Ooooh. Can’t wait! Someday Jane Goodall will be the new Timothy Treadwell. I met her once as a kid and she seemed much more interested in chimps than humans… to the point of disdaining us, almost. It’d be a fitting end for her – certainly better than what Irwin got.
I don’t see much analogy. Unlike Treadwell Goodall is professional and she knows what she’s doing. She pretty much get “adopted” into chimp troop by assuming omega position - basically she let all the other chimps beat her or chase her away - and over time they learned she is not here for their mates or food. So they let her stay. She’s smart enough to not pick fights with chimps and to stay away from chimps from other troops. And she knows what chimps can do to each other.
Now Treadwell was just idiot, who knew shit about bears and though that spiritual mumbo-jumbo and communion with nature make him equal to them. But you don’t get out of food chain by believing.
No, no. Sorry for being unclear. I meant that death by chimp would be a poetic end for her. She gets to die by/with the very things she loves.
Regarding Treadwell, as puppygod pointed out, it may be an unfair comparison. Personally, I just want to see the video. I was bummed that they censored both the Treadwell and Irwin ones.
That’d be awesome! That, or he’s standing in a blissfully green field set against a blue sky as a computer glitch causes a cargo plane overhead to explode, scattering its hold of glittering white MICROSOFT letters meant for their new building and fatally crushing him in the process.
And then he gets pied. Again. By the same person who later became a cargo pilot.
