Under sane governments, e.g. in China, men are not falling behind; they do just fine.
100 or so years ago women were deemed unfeminine to study, be educated, be intellectual, etc. It seems now it’s considered unmanly to do those things, at least in the younger generation.

Agreed. Check out some of Rebecca Jordan-Young’s work on the differences between male and female brains. She concluded that most studies finding significant differences between m/f brains were biased. I personally think the most relevant thing she made clear, is that the vast, vast differences between individuals render any gender differences meaningless, ie splitting up children (at school, for instance) into m/f makes less sense than perhaps “interested in frogs spawn/not interested in frog spawn”. She also stated that despite all these grand claims of huge brain differences between m/f, it is still impossible to tell male from female by looking at the brain.
It does still remain a mystery why both genders learn better separately though. Anyone have any ideas (I think it kinda relates to the OP, right?)? I personally doubt that all-male boarding school are really places where they let the boys run around more…
This is purely anecdotal, but I know several women with college degrees (some with graduate degrees) who are married to men who dropped out of college. These men all have decent paying jobs in traditionally masculine fields, and one is the sole breadwinner in his family; his wife/my friend is a stay-at-home mom. Another friend has mentioned to me that if she and her husband decide to have children then they could easily afford to have her stay home with the kids, as her husband makes enough working in IT to support a family.
In terms of formal education these men are “behind” their wives, but when it comes to income they are mostly ahead of them.
It’s not just anecdotal.
Susan Pinker wrote “the Sexual Paradox” discussing this issue and pointing out that the rise in educational achievement amongst girls still didn’t translate into greater earnings or success in later life. She had plenty of theories and sets of data for why this was for women, but a point concerning men was that academic education doesn’t suit a lot of them, and those who are written off as too thick or unfocussed to ever achieve anything often do go out and become successful in something more practical (one of her case studies was a boy with ADD and behavioural problems who later went on to be a very successful chef).
Furthermore the workplace is still not adapted to having women in it. It keeps being referenced in this thread and the other one about women wanting it all and not getting it going right now, that “women have to make it in their careers early in life before they have a baby”. Why? Men don’t, so why is it the case that it MUST be so for women? It’s simply a failure of the culture of work to keep up with the huge increase of the number of women in professions. There are companies that are adapting, however. A friend of mine knows people who work for the firm Accenture and they have extremely generous provisions for maternity and allowing women to have children earlier so that they keep those women working for them and not have them leave when it’s time to have a child. The women get to keep their career trajectory and jobs, and the companies keep valuable women in their workforce even if it means being flexible about they do it. Everyone wins.

I just wanted to see where you got it from. You would be completely unable to convince me of its validity because I know from the start that it’s not based in fact. Of course you could provide a list of cites that clearly shows me to be wrong, but I know you can’t possibly do that. It’s not because I am playing a game or think little of you or anything, it’s because of the state of the world we live in, the factual one with material cause and effect.
I don’t know that men are really falling behind in general; it’s more that a certain segment of the male population doesn’t give a shit anymore. That’s the segment that in past years, showed up for work on time and played house with the Mrs. because being a husband and father was a pretty sweet gig. As long as you brought home the bacon and didn’t beat your wife (and sometimes even if you did), you had all your meals on the table, clean clothes in the dresser, and you could go straight to the bar/club after work and drink all night with your friends, then spend all weekend at the golf course, the cabin, or the racetrack, smoking smelly cigars, then come home and give the Mrs. a good rogering whether she felt like it or not. And your word was practically absolute as far as major family decisions. Companies used to give married men perks and advantages because they knew guys like that couldn’t slack off or up and quit if the boss got in their face.
Women decided they didn’t like that - they wanted to get jobs and expected hubby to pitch in with the laundry and take care of Junior. News flash, a lot of men have zero interest in family life, in and of itself. They don’t like kids and they don’t mind living in a house that looks like the shack from the opening credits of the Beverly Hillbillies. When the incentives for being a family man went away, so did the family man. It doesn’t take a college degree to keep yourself in a studio apartment with beer and Fritos.
I’m not taking sides as to whether times now are better than they were. If anything I am a completely modern man - I do 90% of the cooking, take the kids to and from school, etc., because I like family life. But most men aren’t like me and it’s their right not to be.
Um… you do know there are women in the trades, right? Sure, there are some trades where sheer brute strength is still important and men are going to continue to dominate, but a lot of it could be done by the average woman what with the advent of power tools and stuff.
Having done some of that sort of work these past few years I’d say the main obstacle to women in the trades is the continuing perception that women don’t go into the trades. For the most part the men I worked with didn’t seem to have issues with me being there (you always get a few exceptions, of course). I got some outright disbelief from those outside the trades, though.
There are some issues with the work conditions and pregnancy/childbirth/nursing - job sites that don’t even have toilets (because we’re there to install them, so when we first show up, no, there’s no plumbing) aren’t going to have lactation rooms for nursing mothers, either. So yeah, it’s not as attractive to women during the childbearing years, but there are women who do it. For that matter, one of the guys on the work crew this past year has been a single father to three pre-teens so it’s not like men don’t have family issues, too. It’s kind of neat his 13 year old daughter is expressing interest in being a carpenter, and she’s even picked up some work helping to clean up job sites, which has given her a look at the profession, along with some of the sons of the various workers who likewise are getting a look.
But the idea there aren’t women in the trades just doesn’t hold water. They’re a minority, yes, but it’s becoming more common. Just like nursing has seen more men getting into the profession in recent decades. The rigidity of old roles is loosening up.
Uh. China invests a lot in international development and is widely regarded as the future leader in the field. Development programs exist primarily for the sake of national security and our own economic development (richer countries=new markets for us.) There are plenty of debates about how this is all done, but it’s rarely being done out of charity, and for people who are good at it, there is plenty of money in it.

Someone who apprentices in the building trades is joining the industry withthe highest unemployment, although that’s mainly because manufacturing was decimated so long ago. This was the point of Rosin’s article, and every other piece written on the issue. Obviously a doctorate in German Literature is not going to do much for your earning potential, but it will still do mare than just about any job you can get without postsecondary education. College graduates make more, overall. Some individuals make less, but they are not illustrative of the overall trends in the economy.

And yet women still only make up around 35% of the student body at Caltech, and 40% at MIT. There’s something signifcant about the fact that the figures at two of the most prestigious technical schools go against the grain like this but I can’t quite figure out what.

Not at all, it was feminists who asserted the existence of male privilege. If I may run with the TV analogy, what they didn’t realize was that male privilege was the only thing keeping Ward Cleaver from turning into those guys from Jersey Shore. The status quo of the 1950s-60s put the male-headed family at the center of the universe, a status quo that also benefited women in many ways.

Women choose marriage less and less because it has less and less to offer them, as well. A lot of women are realizing they are not family women. We are not all hell bent on settling down and making babies and lamenting the difficulty of that. Most women still get a chance to do the nuclear family stuff, just with a bit more time to enjoy casual sex, travel, get an education and build their careers. Those that don’t are usually pretty aware of their choices, and while they might feel a twinge of regret…well, who doesn’t?

When you are born the state comes in and signs you up with a birth certificate and you become the property of the State so as to control and regulate your body and mind. Everyone should know that girls mature a few year faster than do boys. Before processed foods loaded with hormones a normal woman would be fully grown at 16 and a man at 21. That has changed a fews years now however the fact still remains that girl develop first. Why would you put boys and girls the same age in a classroom together? It puts the girl in control of the boy thats why. From their on in life the boy is shaped. The school becomes the parent.
When you get married with a civil state license it is a contract between the state, the girl and the boy. The state controls the marriage and can add to or amend that contract anytime it wants with out your consent or notice. All property from the union including the children, the state has control over,the parents are only baby sitters. This is why social lady can tell you how to raise them. There was a time in America when we did not have state married license. When the churches became licensed around 1913 so they could become except from the newly created 16th amendment, one of the rules imposed by the state on the churches was how to conduct a marriage. Churches were now commanded to follow mans law of getting a license to wedded. God does not require a license to have a marriage. Now the state is in head of the house and not the man.
Some how woman have bean tricked into believing they have more rights than before the women’s movement as in equal rights. What they fail to understand about their history is in the past they had superior rights not equal rights. Gods law made it that way, mans law changed that.
In closing, We have all bean deceived through the educational system, the religious system and the media systems that are all controlled my the police powers of the state with licensing, contracts and franchise. The state is controlled behind the scenes by multinational corporation banks, insurance companies and religions working contrary to Gods Law.
