No one is doing that. But a brand of religion is definitely driving flat earthers. That the Catholic Church accepts evolution and astronomy, including the Big Bang, does not mean that young earth creationists are not driven by their interpretation of the same religious texts.
I think a lot of CTs are held by people who are outside the mainstream of society, not successful by the usual standards, who feel much better about themselves by thinking they know the secrets that they think are kept from the sheeple by the powers that be.
Fascinating that in this of all threads we’re seeing posts from people who insist upon rejecting facts that don’t conform with their own beliefs. Very meta.
The question then becomes: are you joking or serious when you do this?
Eg Climate change denialism usually rests on one or more CTs, and there are plenty of wealthy and educated people in America that subscribe to it. (Not educated in climate science of course, but plenty of electrical engineers and the like who are self appointed experts).
And I didn’t want to bring politics into this thread, but it’s virtually impossible to support a particular orange leader without believing at least some far-fetched CTs. Enough people were conspiratorial minded for that fker to win.
But why are they brought up in threads which have absolutely nothing to do with them? In the example I saw, which is what started me thinking about this, some guy just posted the interesting route his airplane took. All he said was, “Isn’t this neat?” Then some other guy, out of nowhere, said “I wonder what flat earthers think about this!” It just seemed like such a non sequitor.
99.9% of my knowledge of FE comes from jokes on the internet. It’s all anti-FE jokes, sometimes very thinly disguised as pro-FE
In the example you gave, my assumption is that the guy thought it be funny to stick some wacky theory into the conversation. People do that on the internet.
Cool, so you have no knowledge of what actual Flerfs say and think but feel free to state an opinion on what they say and think.
100% of my knowledge comes from listening to them ‘’‘debate’‘’ for over a decade.

Often when I encounter a reference to something that only can be explained by assuming a globe earth I wonder how FEs can not understand this and how they would explain their way out of it. I think it’s natural for those of us who understand reality to be bewildered by those of us who deny reality and want to dig deeper into their thought process.
Every time I’ve seen a comment like that it’s a semi-joking prediction that pretty soon a flat earther will show up in any post that could be tied to geography or earth science. That’s only because pretty soon a flat earther will show up in any post that could be tied to geography or earth science.
For this specific example, it’s because the popular version of the ‘Flat Earth Map’ (I know, I know…) has the southern hemisphere stretched out to such a degree that a flightpath from, say, (and this is the classic example) Santiago Chile to Sydney Australia is so long that the durations mean they’d be flying 2 or 3 times supersonic. So the FErs deny these routes even exist, despite copious evidence to the contrary. Flight paths, and aeroplane flight mechanics in general, are a bone of contention with FErs. The person who posted ‘I wonder what FErs make of this’ is clearly aware of that and was posting it for a laugh.
I have met a couple of these kooks. About 11 years ago I was in a bar where I had gone to attend a friend’s concert. Sitting at my table was a hipster who with a straight face attempted to explain to me why the world is flat. I don’t remember a word of what he said, and I don’t want to. Trying to justify such a notion in this day and age seems just asinine. My late grandmother would say it’s ripe for an ambulance to come and take you straight to the loony bin.
I don’t waste my time researching flat earthers and what they believe and why. That said, maybe someone should show interest in them as flat earthers (whether or not they believe that shit or are just trolling us) disseminate falsehoods, and therefore it may be necessary to debunk them and and prevent them from deluding other people.
When TikTok was young, someone went there and claimed the Roman Empire was a hoax. This is just insulting to people’s intelligence. The Roman Empire left us countless monuments and testaments to its existence, ranging from the ruins of the Roman Forum to amphitheatres in its former provinces, from the literary works of Seneca, Ovid or Julius Caesar to actual correspondence between Roman soldiers and their mother, father, wife, etcetera. When people come out with bunk there may be gullible people who latch on. Someone may need to do the dirty job of de-bunking their bunk.
