I read that the French have sent around 5000 soldiers to protect and assist in the evacuation of French Nationals in the Ivory Coast (in West Africa). The troops are having a tough time, it seems…the locals are taking potshots at them (it almost sounds like they are Americans!).
Given that France was one of the Ivory Coast’s closest allies and trading partners, why are the French troops so widely hated now?
Any interventionsists here for sending Americans into this soon-to-be-another -african/african massacre?
The Ivorians who are loyal to the government object to a peace treaty the French brokered. The loyalists feel that the treaty gave too much power to the rebels.
This, in particular, was behind the recent near-riot at the airport when departing French citizens were set upon by loyalists.
I’ll see if I can locate a cite.
This might help explain it.
what Pucky said, and, by the way, it’s “Côte d’Ivoire”
