Why are the Wal-Mart cops patrolling my neighborhood?

The past few weeks, on top of the patrols of the Roeland Park Police Department, a new police force has made its presence known in my neighborhood.

The Wal-Mart Security Patrol.

Every few hours, a Wal-Mart police car with Texas plates will drive by the house. Every so often, when I’m driving around, I’ll pass the Wal-Mart cops as they’re cruising the neighborhood.

My question … why does Wal-Mart has a cruising security patrol, why do their vehicles have Texas plates, and what exactly are they doing, anyhow?

Looking for stolen shopping carts?

You might be able to find out by calling your local police department’s nonemergency number. Tell them what you’ve seen and express suspiscion–if they know about it they’ll probably give you at least some information.

Strange- your in the KC area?

I would call the police myself, if they don’t offer an explination at least if something fishy is going on they are aware of it.

Seriously, I just took a look and found no official announcements online. Here, however, is the contact information for your local police:

Why not drop Rex Taylor a line? He looks like an all-business sort of guy.

Why not just wave one of them over and ask what they are up too?
My guess is that maybe Walmart is selling private security services in your area.

I don’t know why, but that was the funniest thing I’ve read in GQ in a good long time.
