I don’t know if this counts but I saw one on TV;) Seriously, I was watching this Food TV show with Anthony Bourdain called a “A Cook’s Tour” and the chef at some place called “The French Laundry” made the host a custard infused with tobacco and coffee as a joke.(Yes, it had real tobacco in it.) Oddly enough the host said it was pretty good.(But you got the impression from Anthony that this chef was unimaginable a great chef so it wasn’t so out of the question he could make something that sounds so stomach churning actually tasty.)
Most people don’t stuff food into their noses.
Personally, I think the flavor and smell of tobacco smoke is sublime. I quit smoking some time ago for health reasons, so I’m well beyond the point where nicotine addiction has any hold on me. But I still enjoy getting a second hand smell of a cigarette or cigar every once and while. It’s ridiculous to think that people only smoke because they crave nicotine. Ask anyone who’s tried to quit smoking by chewing nicotine gum if that provides a satsifactory alternative. People smoke in large part because it is PLEASURABLE to smoke. Giving up the nicotine is a very small part of giving up smoking in my experience.
Ever eaten when you had a cold? Food looses a lot of taste, if you can’t smell it. It’s the combination of smell andf flavour that does it.
That said - pure tobacco doesn’t really taste much of anything. Pipe tobacco, snuff, cigarrs, chewing tobacco and whatever is in cigarettes today has loads of flavouring.
There is simply not much sense in giving something tobacco flavour, since what we think is the smell/taste of tobacco, is actually additives.
actually I was addicted to nicotine chewing gum for 5 years. Going from smokes to gum was easy. Used to chew so much that I started dislocating my jaw
A couple of years ago, a buddy came back from overseas with a box of contraband Cuban cigars, and gave one to me. I told him I didn’t smoke, but he was a little bit drunkenly adamant, so I shrugged and accepted it.
I called a cigar-smoker friend the next day and asked him if he wanted a Cuban cigar. His answer consisted of a rhetorical question on the Pope’s religious affiliation.
Just before he lit the cigar, I asked him if I could take a drag on it – I’ve never had any interest in smoking, but figured this would be as good as it could get. Also, it had indeed been a delight to run the unsmoked cigar past my nostrils – the smell was sweet ecstasy.
But the drag was a disappointment. It didn’t taste anything like it smelled. The smell of smoke was more prominent – it felt like I was drinking burning paper or leaves through a straw. Which I guess, I was.
Tobacco flavored products would hold no appeal for me.
I could sort of understand tobacco-scented products though.
Now if there was some way to combine tomatoes AND tobacco. Mmmmmmmmm…
a pipe is the same
smells better than it tastes
its a spectator smoke:cool:
That’s why, on the occasions when I fancy a change from my usual Marlboros and smoke a cigar or pipe instead, I commit the sinful act of inhaling. Yes, I know it’s frowned upon by connoisseurs, but the exhale makes the smoke taste more like it smells, if that makes any sense.
I guess this turned into somewhat of a poll on who likes the flavor of tobacco.
Some of you think it tastes awful, that’s no suprise to me. But it doesn’t seem like that would prevent a market for it. I think sardines in a can taste terrible, but you can find them in almost any convienence store. If only 10% of people who smoked (including those who’ve quit) liked the idea of a synthetic tobacco flavor, I bet there’d be a market.
Some of you think the nicotine/addictive nature of tobacco is the only thing driving the market. I don’t agree. I think most folks start the habit because it tastes good. I’d also point out that there’s a market for beer without alcohol, coffee without caffiene.
To those of you who tried chewing tobacco and hated it, well, I love it. I used to chew every day, but gave it up. I miss the taste, but now when I try it, it gives me a headache. I’d like to get the taste without the drug.
They can make jellybeans taste like popcorn - why not chew?
And to those of you who think the tobacco industry, or the anti-tobacco folks would rise up and stop such a product - I guess you have a point. But the anti-tobacco folks haven’t yet stopped me from being able to by the real stuff on almost any street corner - I don’t see how they’d stop a harmless alternative.
Could the tobacco industry stop such a thing? Maybe, but that’s speculation. Has anybody ever heard of a tobacco flavored anything on the market? (which was really my OP to start with) I don’t think so. Anyway, the dairy folks haven’t stopped margarine or soy milk. The pork folks haven’t stopped the marketing of those bacon-flavored soy things. Heck, I can get peanut butter flavored anything, have the peanut folks tried to put a stop to that? I don’t see how they could stop what I’m asking about.
Nah. It was to look cool.

i understand having been a pipe and cigar smoker
there is a certain difference between inhaling these as against ciggies
its an option to enjoy and not par for the smoke?
mrcrow, some folks like to inhale, although I guess we’re in the minority. Perhaps it’s more common amongst those who usually smoke cigarettes, and only switch to a cigar or pipe for a change once in a while? As far as aficionados are concerned, it really isn’t the done thing.
There was a previous thread on this very subject, although I’ll be buggered if I can even find it now. As I mentioned in that particular thread, I don’t really lose much sleep over which way is considered correct, as long as I enjoy my smoke. For me, that’s what it’s all about.
That aside, the flavour of tobacco is what got me started. I really quite enjoy it, although I realise some people generally aren’t over-keen, and smoke for other reasons instead - addiction, peer pressure, relaxation or whatever. If it was possible to obtain products which offer the flavour of tobacco without all the usual downsides, I’d jump at the chance. Would be nice on a hot day to chug down a can of ice-cold Diet Marlboro :).
Hey, tobacco flavoured dip to go with my Beer flavoured chips (I WISH I had a link…I think the research was done at Virginia Tech…).
Seriously though, If they could make a flavouring that tasted like fine pipe tobaco smells, it just might be usable.
Oh and one more thing. I remember when I was kid a candy came out called “Soccer Balls” that tasted like a brand new soccer ball smelled…EEEWWWW.
So why not Tobacco flavoured?
