Why are there so many Chinese ads at the World Cup?

I mean on the boundary walls.

China did not qualify for this world cup and this sport has to be more popular through England.

When you watch Figure Skating, you see Japanese ads no matter where because the sport is so popular there. Is soccer that popular in China that there are more Chinese ads than anything other than English?

Even Budweiser has the Chinese name right next to it. It’s 百威 , by the way.

I’m surprised Chinese companies have put that much into an even their own country is not in this year.

Chinese companies are rich. The daily show did a segment where they talked to the #1 talk show host in China, and he said his nightly audience is something like 250 million viewers. The daily show gets about 2 million.

Can’t say I’ve noticed one yet.

Are the networks using that digital overlay when they superimpose ads during the broadcast?

Yeah, not super useful post. I’m in the United States watching on ESPN and ABC and I see them in every match.

I’ve also watched it on Univision and Iraqi TV on the internet, and I see them.

I’ve seen them no matter what network I have on.

I’ve seen it on CBC(Canada), too.

Because at least a couple of *hundred million *chinese tune in for each match. And they bet like fiends on the outcomes. So, you put up some ads and reach your target market. Teams can’t afford the superstar salaries without the global advertising market.

I’ve watched every match to date on CBC and I honestly can’t recall seeing one ad in Chinese. Now, some of those matches were watched in pubs and much alcohol was consumed, so it’s possible I didn’t notice.

According to the cable guide, they’ll be replaying a match at midnight. I’ll have a look with sober eyes and see if I’ve just missed them.

Look at the Budweiser signs and the China Telecom ads.

The China Telecom one looks more or less like this:

Telecom Logo

I’ve also read that Chinese companies see Africa as a market that western companies have overlooked.

Well, I’ve seen the Budweiser ad. I remember seeing that one before, but I never noticed the part in Chinese. I’ve also seen one other ad for Yingli Solar. It rotates with the McDonalds ad, but not each time. No sign of China Telecom yet, though, but I could imagine that the ads might change depending on which teams are playing. This replay is of the Denmark/Cameroon match and it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that the more publicized teams (England, Brazil, etc.) might get different ads. As to why the ads are there, I have no idea, but China Guy’s reply sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

There are also ads (in both English and Chinese) for Harbin Beer (哈尔滨啤酒).
