In the choice between freedom and security, you can’t have both. And not everyone selects freedom. Most Americans do, of course, but that’s a cultural bias, because we live in a prosperous country of plenty. If you live in abject poverty, you may decide that security is better than freedom. Freedom doesn’t put bread on the table.
Also, even if you think this article in nutso, why do you try to tarnish all liberals with that? The counter example would be to find some ultra-right wing nutso who thinks that, after we’ve conquered Iraq, we should hit Iran and Turkey next, and then to condemn all conservatives are being “freaking retard.”
Once upon a time, it was possible to be “centrist” – an independent, voting for the best candidate regardless of political party or of “left/right” designation. That’s no longer possible as we become more and more polarized, and have knee-jerk reactions (on both sides of the political spectrum.) It started in the Clinton Administration with the farcical impeachment, where the notion of independent thought got tossed out the window and people sided up by party. I weep for the country.

When I surf around I go many places, most of which have views I disagree with, since I believe it’s more interesting to read the thoughts (see I’m being magnanimous) from the people I disagree with than the ones I agree with (which is what brings me here). A more interesting question I think is why you together with your liberal hordes frequent the SDMB, when most of you seem to agree on so much. Personally I prefer to discuss with those I disagree with, but that’s just me – you know mad, bad and crazy like something really crazy.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. It’s a damn shame to see the great and admirable leftist cause being hijacked by people who would gladly sell their dear mother together with the downtrodden masses for a cheap shot at the evil US. I used to be a leftist, until I realised the cause had been taken over by highbrow post-modern deconstruction and lowbrow knee-jerk anti-Americanism, anti-Israelism, anti-anythingism. These days I just think there’s so little worth salvaging, and that pissed me off to no end.
