Why are there so many SD Classics on the Straight Dope front page?

Often, as today, they’re all Classics. Age beginning to take its toll, Unca Cec? Time, dare I say it, for a younger, more productive man (or woman) to take up the sword, to fight the good fight against ignorance?

I’m not quite sure what you’re suggesting, but there is only ONE Cecil Adams, perhaps he is on leave. ;).

Maybe it’s the same reason they’d suddenly start playing patriotic music on Soviet TV!

I thought Cecil was something like the Phantom, carrying on the fight from generation to generation. Maybe the Cecil we know was killed by Singh pirates, and the new one is out serving vengance or something, and is only giving us tidbits from the chronicles until he has time to take up the fight against ignorance once more :dubious:

Perhaps Cecil knows that most people are ignorant enough not to notice. The front page is mainly for newbies to get a taste before they dive into the boards anyway. This is where the true fight against ignorance is taking place. Cecil is aware that it’s not a one man job.

Also, there is the constant funding problem. It takes a good chunk of change for him and the staff to cruise the world on there luxury yachts throwing half naked, drunken parties for each other. Hard to write up a new column every week when you are smashed and have Singh pirates chasing after you.

Or perhaps his day job is taking up a lot of his time.

When you consider that he has posted here only a few times, and that there are members who have posted tens of thousands of times, and that there are dozens of “advisers” who presumably research things for free, we really don’t need a “Cecil Adams,” whoever he may be, and whether he is a real person or not, who may or may not still be alive.

How many people are there who can get the Chicago reader only in paper and don’t use the Internet?

Monday - SD Classic or occasionally new and entertaining SDSAB report

Tuesday - SD Classic or occasionally new and entertaining SDSAB report

Wednesday - SD Classic or occasionally new and entertaining SDSAB report

Thursday - SD Classic or occasionally new and entertaining SDSAB report

Friday - New column from Cecil

Saturday - No update

Sunday - No update
It’s been the same format for a couple of years now, am I misunderstanding the question?

Well… it seems like today’s update is also a classic instead of a new column. And while I thought that usually there’d be at least one SDSAB report per week, there aren’t any of those on the front page. (Haven’t been checking those regularly, and by the archives it does seem like they’ve thinned out.)

On the other hand, there is defintely one recent column on the front page, the birds and teflon one. Guess the OP missed that one.

I could always be wrong, in fact, I usually am. But I seem to remember that same “classic” from yesterday. They usually don’t update the front page from yesterday until around noonish.

Right. There’s a new Cecil column that will go up today. And a new staff report will go up on Tuesday. We’ve seen a few more classic SD columns recently because there have been no staff reports for the last two weeks.

If you subscribe to the mailing list, you get to see the staff reports and cecil columns a bit earlier.

Way back when, we had a new Staff Report on Tuesday and Thursday, a classic column on Monday and Wednesday, and a new column from Cecil on Friday. We weren’t getting enough Staff Reports to keep up, so we cut back to a new Staff Report on Tuesday, classic columns on M W Th, and a new column from Cecil on Friday. It’s been that way for several years.

However, Ed Zotti and READER staff edit the Staff Reports (as well as Cecil’s columns), and some weeks they’re just too overworked (or get sick or whatever), and so from time to time, a classic column is run on Tuesday in lieu of a new staff report. That’s happened the last two weeks.
