Why are women's names on bottom of paper bags?

It seems that when I buy something and it’s given to me in a paper bag, on the bottom are some specs about the bag (4# or whatnot) but there is often a person’s name and it’s invariably a woman’s name. Why is this? I am in the NE USA but have noticed it in the SE USA too.

Cecil answered this…Sort of.

The first names of people on the bags are usually the person that actually makes that batch of bags at the manufacturer. Kinda like the “Inspected By”
concept… but their real name instead of a number.

soulburnz has about got it. Here’s an NPR story on the names:

Paper Bags

Thanks, I appreciate that. That is nice that their handiwork gets such renown.

Thanks for that link Squink.

The NPR soundbite mentions Warehouser Paper [not sure on the spelling] in Kansas City. We used to have a division here in Cedar Rapids, IA. I must have talked to someone that worked there about it before.

Our local grocery store uses plastic sacks that actually say “made with pride by: Jane” at the top of the sacks. They are a midwest chain so I would assume they use Warehouser [or whoever they are now] for their sacks. I couldn’t find Warehouser in the phone book. I think they got bought out awhile ago.

You might try spelling it “Weyerhaeuser”…
